Florida - storms

We’re going to Florida on Monday for two weeks. We’ve been before a few times, but not for the last ten years, and know it is hot and humid and that every afternoon brings a storm like clockwork. You can literally set your watch by it normally. The problem is though, that the forecast for the next two weeks is storms all day, every day for the entire time we are there. Literally, thunderstorms for the entire day. I know I can’t change it but I’m so upset. It’s costing so much money and we’ve not had a holiday for 5 years. I don’t know if the plane will even be able to land there on Monday with the forecast being so bad. I wouldn’t mind if it was just a day or two but it’s the entire trip that we can see forecasts for. It’s fine right up until the day we arrive when it just becomes non stop storms.

Hmm that’s crap. Not sure there is an answer except embracing it. It’s warm rain. They do shut certain parks though as it’s dangerous, Disney is usually ok.

You can change the weather, just roll with it, wear crocs (or similar) and head out.

Not being totally unsympathetic but it's August in the Caribbean, it's storm/hurricane season 🤔

I know and I fully expect storms every day, but the entire day for two weeks solid is not normal. I’m just hoping the forecasts are wrong.

I’d expect it to be sporadic throughout the day rather than all day every day. We went last year and only had 2 afternoons of storms. One did last about 3 hours. We went in the Harry Potter indoor bits.

Where in Florida are you going? Orlando looks fine…

We lived in Orlando for 2 years, you'll be fine. The storms are pretty intense/quite exciting, but fairly short lived.

Even if they are longer, you can still go about your day, you just need to adapt a bit, it's still very, very warm.

Thanks, I’m hoping they are short lasting like usual. We’re used to early afternoon storms around 3-6pm ish but we’ve never known it to be forecast for the entire day before.

It’ll most likely be staggered throughout the afternoon and intermittent. Unless there’s am actual named storm. That’s when it’s a bit different. They usually pass in a couple of days though.

travelallthetime · 15/08/2024 13:25

Hi, im a travel agent and sell Loads of Orlando. Please don't worry, we went last year and it was forecast storms every day. We actually only had one big storm, it rained maybe 5-6 times for an hour in the afternoon and we went for three weeks. The thing is, the area is massive, it can be raining at Magic Kingdom and sunny in Epcot, then Universal will have whole different weather too, ignore the weather forecasts and plan your day as you want it, thats what we did!

Eastie77Returns · 15/08/2024 13:27

We are currently in Menorca where my ‘trusted’ weather app forecast storms all day, every day from the day of our arrival. I was tearful when I saw it (similarly first beach holiday in years).

What has actually happened is rain/thunderstorms early morning which clears up by 10ish. Followed by several hours of glorious sunshine and then sometimes another short shower late afternoon. It’s actually fine. The rain gives us a natural break from the swimming pool, beach or whatever. DC have lunch indoors, chill, nap and watch TV and then back out again.

I find intense heat quite unpleasant so the cooler mornings and afternoons are great for me. I’m sure it will be similar for you and the storms will not be non-stop 24/7.

longdistanceclaraclara · 15/08/2024 13:30

But look at the percentages in your app. Its not going your way be storms all day every day. AccuWeather has a different story plus you're still talking fairly long range.

I was in DC a few years ago in August and the storms were something else, we just hit wet were dry again in minutes and carried on.

You could be in the Balearics right now, they don't have it great. You can't guarantee weather anywhere.

Thank you! I don’t mind rain, we’ve got ponchos ready to go, it’s just the lightening that will put a stop to everything. All we can do is see, I suppose. We’ve booked a fancy suite as it’s our wedding anniversary so at least we can enjoy that if we’re stuck inside.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but for various meteorological reasons (that I don't fully understand!) they're predicting an unusually bad hurricane season this year.

notimagain · 15/08/2024 15:48

@QuizNight

I’m not sure I’d be chucking the H word into the mix, certainly not at the moment.

Looks like lots of days of convective activity with lightish winds…so high chance of a thunderstorm or two most days but manageable.

Re: “ I don’t know if the plane will even be able to land there on Monday with the forecast being so bad”

ATM It’s doesn’t look that bad and chances are the crew will decide to carry a bit more fuel than they would on a non stormy day, so that if a thunderstorm is around/over the airfield when you arrive they’ll be able to hold long enough for the bad weather to pass through and then land.

BackToWhereItAllBegan · 15/08/2024 22:26

I've been due to land at Miami when it was closed for a thunder storm. All that happened was, we landed at a nearby airport, sat for 30 minutes then took off again as soon as Miami reopened so no worries that you won't get to Orlando.
I haven't seen any hurricane activity forecast to hit the mainland over the next couple of days (they can usually start warning us about 10 days out for potential hurricanes)
It may be very hot and humid which increases the chance of storms at any point during the day but very unlikely to be all day everyday. A good thunderstorm uses up all the storm ingredients for a few hours so you'll get plenty of breaks!
