Holiday with broken leg

Hi all

Was just hoping for some advice or past experiences. My DD who’s nearly 3 sadly broke her leg last Thursday and is in a full leg cast. We are due to go to Portugal next Wednesday. We have an appointment at the fracture clinic this week and the doctor said they will determine then if she can fly or not.

My question is, if she’s fit to fly what is the best thing to do!? Do we go on holiday with a one of those cast covers so she can have a little paddle in the pool etc and just make the best of a bad situation or should I just cancel the holiday. Feeling very sad about the accident so would love some advice. Thank you!

Do you have any other children who would be spending time in the pool or sea? That would be tough on your 3yo if they couldn't join in. On the other hand, it would be tough on other dc if you cancelled.
Are you staying in a hotel with kids club? They might make allowances for accepting a 3yo if you explained the situation.

If you can get a full leg cast that's ok for being submerged (ask dr at apt) then she could swim around a pool in a rubber ring! Or sit in a bigger ring/ on a lilo (although you may need to use a beach for this as some pools don't allow it)

So really it'll be the flight, how well she's sleeping and what there is to do around the place that you can visit with a pushchair.

I've always believed a holiday is what you make it. So as long as she isn't in pain and is allowed to- I'd still go.

At three she should get a cast that can go in pool water (not sea because of sand). By two almost three weeks down the line she may start walking on it (fracture dependent). Lots of carrying but shouldn’t be too bad.

Make the best of a bad situation, she'll barely remember the holiday but you'll be glad for a bit of sun!

I'd say if the doctors give you the green light, go for it! Just be prepared to adjust your plans a bit—bring a cast cover, and maybe plan some chill activities where she can be comfy. It could still be a lovely break, even if it's not quite the holiday you initially imagined. Kids are resilient, and you’ll make special memories regardless.

Just got the all clear to go, and still really undecided but leaning towards making the best out of a bad situation! Thanks for all your advice really appreciate it 😊
