Walk me through a package holiday?

I have arranged one many years ago pre kids but have forgotten. Now I haven't been abroad for years and haven't got the time to arrange everything separately so I thought about doing a package holiday but I just don't get how it works. Whenever we travel we always have a separate room for DD7 but the sites I've seen seem to expect her to be in the same room as me and DP, is that what people really do?
And what about eating, DD has dietary requirements, can you find out what the hotel offers ahead of time? Can you choose what flights you get?
I know it can't be this hard but I just don't really get it!

You have a separate room for your DD7?….that doesn’t sound safe

clary · 09/08/2024 14:43

I think sharing a room with a 7yo is deffo what most ppl do. Alternative would be to book sc accommodation which would give more flexibility.

I agree, a separate hotel room for a 7yo is a firm no. But personally I wouldn’t want to share a hotel room with them either. Which is why we always did sc tbh.

I assume (hope) the op means they get an apartment or similar with two rooms.

Snacksgalore · 09/08/2024 14:45

Do you mean you want a two bedroom apartment? Or one bed with child on sofa bed in living area or actually two seperate hotel rooms?

Some AL hotels are better with dietry requirements than others. TUI own brand eg holiday village and TUI Blue cater to them but search trip advisor reviews for allergy to see how well.

There will be different flights on offer (very limited now for this year) but no always a huge choice depending on airports.

Drachuughtty · 09/08/2024 14:46

Yes, I meant I'm after a 2 bed apartment, not leaving a 7 year old in a separate room in a hotel. Can you get apartments on a package deal or are they all hotels? Where do you look for that?

I think self-catering in an apartment or villa is the way forward.

Both bookable as part of a package holiday.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 09/08/2024 14:47

Some hotels have rooms with a separate bedroom area, child usually sleeps on sofa bed in living room and adults in the bedroom, most it's a double or 2 singles and a sofa bed all in the same room. Our daughter is just 8 and we've never had a problem with this.

Penguinsa · 09/08/2024 14:48

What you can get is like an apartment in a hotel on packages which is 1 or 2 bedroomed so child sleeps in bedroom and you sleep in living area or vice versa. Or some people do sleep all in same room, which is generally cheaper. Dietary requirements are normally catered for and food would normally check reviews as well as look on hotel website - would avoid places with bad food reviews as in food poisoning. Generally on a package there's every food under the sun including very plain ones which work well for asd kids.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 09/08/2024 14:48

Look for family rooms or interconnecting rooms. Some family rooms have kids “den” - often it’s basically a suite where what would be the living room is a separate bedroom for kids.

many will have photos or floor plans.

something like this is the sort of thing that might suit you

I normally only book with TUI and it’s not an option on filter. You can either check each hotel which is time consuming, ask a travel agent for options or somethings just googling two bed apartment child friendly hotels will throw up some articles which list what your looking for.

Penguinsa · 09/08/2024 14:50

We've also had hotels via packages were its like a small villa.

tattychicken · 09/08/2024 14:52

Search for aparthotels

Loub55 · 09/08/2024 14:57

This is useful on Jet2 as once you have searched you can filter to just view 2 bedroom apartments

go into a travel agent and let them search for you!

mummyh2016 · 09/08/2024 15:08

This is what we look for, last year we stayed at Sentido Aeqoura in Lanzarote in a junior suite. This year we were at Binimar in Menorca in a 1 bed apartment. I couldn't do a weeks holiday us all sleeping in the same room, no way.

Brendabigbaps · 09/08/2024 15:09

Lots of hotels have 2 bed apartments or suites, you just need to do your research.
search for a holiday in the place you want to go and then trawl through the hotels. The first option will often be just one bedroom but look at the run upgrades and you will find alsorts available

clary · 09/08/2024 15:12

Tbf @Drachuughtty I thought you meant a hotel rather than an apartment as you asked about hotel food! But ideas from PPs look helpful. Is this for next year?

This is one of the reasons we don't book a package as we don't want to sleep in the same room as our child either.

I wish more hotels would have double rooms for families as standard rather than as an expensive suite options 😩

HAF1119 · 09/08/2024 15:18

Try holiday village and tui blue for 2 bed rooms

Oblomov24 · 09/08/2024 15:18

What is your budget, dates and other criteria op. Don't be shy. Let mn help you find the best deal. Once we find what you want, there's always ways of finding the same deal cheaper.

Oblomov24 · 09/08/2024 15:20

My Dh is superb at this. He comes home with a Tenerife deal for all 4 of us, AI, a week, £1,100. Yes really!
