I need suggestions today, please, about Cornwall.

Going to Cornwall for a few days early tomorrow (Wednesday). We'll be staying between Looe and Polperro, a few miles inland.

Any suggestions where we can go with 7yo, 5yo, and 18mo (other than Eden Project!)? Thursday's weatherforecast is dire, so an indoor activity would probably be a good idea, too. Dh wants to visit Land's End - is there anything there, or anything to do on the way there or back?

Thanks.

and Fowey, walking there from Readymoney beach and St Cathering's Castle. Also nice outing.

Dairyland near Newquay is good for little ones - lots of animal type things & paly areas etc

Agree with everyone, don't bother with Lands End, if only because it will take you all day to get there and back! I'd think twice and I live much closer than you'll be staying! Added to that it's utter tosh (aside from scenery of course)

I would pick up one of the many leaflets that will be scattered around where you are staying and look for something with not too much of a drive.. or

try here

the local paper often has vouchers for reduced entry to attractions, and 'what's on' guides

lands end is pants.we live in north cornwall.we like to go to trethorne-lots indoors and out, crealy(mostly outside but some good stuff inside),newquay zoo, newquay aquirium, colliford lake is brilliant but mostly outside.

cheesesarnie · 22/04/2008 20:57

looe is pretty but nothing special!

cheesesarnie · 22/04/2008 20:58

here is looe

Two places that look dubious but have provided my city living DDs with the best up close animal encounters are Screech Owl Sanctuary and Springfileds Pony Centre. Both cheap as chips if you buy The Cornish Guardian - 2 for 1 offers in there regularly.
Another vote for the Seal Sanctuary at Gweek too if you want to go further west.

cheesesarnie · 22/04/2008 21:06

oh yes seal sanctury and owl sanstury are fab!is paradise park still open?i liked it there when i was younger.

spudmasher · 22/04/2008 21:08

Think so. I think I saw an ad on the side of a bus last week.....
I'm an ex N Cornwall girl Cheesesarnie!I love it.

I don't know what Looe is like, MTT, sorry. We drove through it on the way there, and on the way back, and that was all!

I can't believe Dobwalls has been shut down!! I used to live in Duloe (5 miles outside of Looe) and go to school in Looe, dammit this post is making me feel v. homesick..

Lands End is an awfully long way away from Looe BTW!

Haven't lived in the South West since I was a teenager, so can't advise re kiddie activities (but do have excellent knowledge of local bus shelters to sneak crafty fags and where to buy white lightning cider if that's any use) lol

dorisofdevon · 22/04/2008 21:12

Mallory towers Looe is so so, there are nicer and prettier places but it depends on what you want and the age of your DC's.

bohemianbint · 22/04/2008 21:16

I love Lanhydrock but depends whether your kids would be into wandering round the house! The grounds are beautiful if you get a gap between rainstorms and you can picnic wherever you like.

jivegirl · 22/04/2008 21:16

BTW I forgot about Flambards - it is GREAT for younger kids (used to be my birthday treat for years!) They have a massive freefall slide called the Demon Drop. Also some weird connection with planes and war memerobilia (can't spell that) not sure what that was all about..

Lanhydrock is lovely but last summer my dd2 age 6 set off an alarm when she fingered a table cloth. The curators are scary.

i like flambards-thats quite good for bad weather-its mostly indoors.

jivegirl · 22/04/2008 21:20

You could drive around Dartmoor too (north of Plymouth) and check out the Two Bridges Hotel near Princetown, they do luscious, huge cream teas after 3pm (I used to waitress there). It's lovely to sit there and relax if it's a sunny day. The dartmoor ponies roam free over the moor (but can be grumpy so be careful!)

Hmm thinking about scones with jam and cream now - yum!

CristinaTheAstonishing · 22/04/2008 21:25

We went to a donkey sanctuary with indoor softplay as well. I think it was near Bodmin. The DCs (7 and 2 last summer) had a fantastic time and still talk about the donkey ride in which the donkey stopped for a p*ss. That's their fondest memory of Cornwall and the great decider in us having another holiday in the same place (Whitsand Bay) this summer.

BigBadMouse · 22/04/2008 21:34

On your way home you could visit the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. I went there with 7, 5, 3 and 1 yo DCs (not all mine!) and they all loved it. The Cinema is very close by so maybe you combine the two.

Lands End? - absolutely Dire!

Looe and Polperro are very pretty (I was nearby today and it was lovely).

What sort of things are you, DH and your DCs interested in?

dorisofdevon · 24/04/2008 17:04

just had a thought what about morwellham quay?
