Day Trip to Liverpool - what's worth doing?

Dh is going to Liverpool for the day (Albert Docks area) on Saturday, and we thought we might tag along.

What's worth doing? The boys are 8 and 10. We like science, museums and 'culture'. We don't like shoppping!

Please give me your top tips and must-sees.

Ta,
Rx

Maritime Museum on Albert Dock. Excellent new Slavery gallery.

World Museum near Lime St station. Has a space/time gallery and free planetarium shows

Tate is near the Maritime Museum, and Walker Art Galleyr is near the World Museum.

Duck tours are fun but pricey (tour of Liverpool by land and sea on amphibious vehicle!)

thats so strange me too! was just looking
on-line think I've settled on spaceport which you get the ferry to, as they have a sci fi thing on with a star wars weekend.

Ooh that sounds interesting LGR!
Why are you ending up at Liverpool?

I'm liking the sound of everything actually! I haven't been to Liverpool for about 15 years - loved it then

I want to go for a week to Liverpool now

I've just shelled out loadsa dosh for half term activities, so I think we'll stick with the free museums this time.

I like the look of the World Museum, and we may go to the Maritime Museum later in the day.

Walker Art Gallery has the friendliest staff in the world. One tracked us out into the car park because DD had left her hat behind! depending on the exhibition they have themed kids activities, dressing up, making models, that kind of thing. Ours loved it (even more than the World Museum which is still miles better than anything Manc can offer!!!!!!!).

Don't forget the ferry! Worth it for the view of the Liver buildings.

Spaceport is excellent! (just down the road from where my mum lives...) The Star Wars thing was still on last week when we were down on the beach nearby, people in very scary costumes milling about (Darths Vader & Maul, Boba Fett, aliens etc) that DD was part-terrified, part-fascinated by.

Next door to it, in the ferry terminal, for those with littles, is Play Planet, a rather fabby soft-play centre. And the Ferry is fun in itself, if you don't mind Gerry and the Pacemakers...

To the OP, would agree that the Walker, the World Museum, the Maritime/Slavery museum are all fab. Also, a bit further into the city centre (it's a very compact city!) is the Bluecoat, which is a lovely old building with an Arts Centre, gallery space and lovely cafe, also a wonderful 'secret' garden which I used to spend many happy lunch hours in. Well worth a visit.

Have fun!

thanks for all your posts and suggestions.

I'm really looking forward to this. I just need to work on the boys to persuade them to get out of bed and into the car at 7 am! Especially as we are going out to the theatre the night before, so will have a relatively late night.

Maybe I should let them sleep in their clothes?
