Just wondering if anyone has been to Limoges for the weekend?

Found some cheap flights and tempted
to go with a few couples in our 30s. Is their much to do or any recommendations for vineyards and restaurants please?

Ive had a look at get your guide but doesn’t seem to much on there.

Thank you ☺️

It's farming country. "Limousin" is the adjective (feminine: Limousine, as in the car - see Wikipedia for an attempted explanation), and "Boeuf limousin" is a premium label of beef.

The main site of interest nearby is Oradour-sur-Glane, which everyone who gets a chance should visit.

Otherwise there isn't a whole lot else going on that would merit a Get Your Guide-type visit. It's very much la France profonde.

It isn't really much of a wine growing area, it's more beef cattle and lamb producing.
There are some Gallo Roman sites nearby. The town has some interesting old quarters for local produce around the market place, and butchery area, there are some nice restaurants, and an opera house, and the iconic railway station.
Not far away is lake Vassiviere where you can take a lake cruise.
It would probably be a very relaxing weekend! 🐑 🐑 🐏 🐑 🐑

My sister lives nearby. As a PP said, visit Oradour sur Glane. It is gloomy, it is a village that the Germans wiped out in revenge for an SS officer being kidnapped. They have left the village ruins as they were as a memorial. There is a very good visitor centre. The cemetery is heartbreaking with photos of the victims on family graves. Although we have visited her several times, we have not been to Limoges city, but every other place we have visited round there is full of historic buildings, the roads are quiet, and there are some brilliant restaurants. Car hire prices are very high compared to Spain and Ireland.

Thanks everyone so much for your advice …. That would explain why there’s not many vineyard tours but we’ve found a beautiful place with a pool so I think we’ll spend the weekend seeing and drinking wine by the pool!

I lived in Limoges for a year in the 90s. As said, it is very much la France profonde with little to do. Oradour made a huge mark on me - it's not a fun visit but well worth it. The countryside is lovely - it is farming country. Limoges city is fine. There is a cathedral and some old cobbled streets but not many sights.

Are there any little villages you recommend nearby that we can get a taxi to and go to a restaurant thank you ☺️ x

I wouldn't bother with Limoges itself but fly there. Get a car. Do some exploring. Not a bad part of France to enjoy some markets, local food and wine.

eurochick · 05/08/2024 21:34

I didn't have a car when I lived there so didn't do much exploring so I can't really help on the surrounding area. I do remember some friends driving us down to the Dordogne though. It isn't far.

Be aware that there is no public transport from the airport to the city so you will need to take a taxi.

I've been to Limoges with friends who are locals there. I enjoyed just wandering around and having long lunches. Also, Limoges is famous for its porcelain and I believe there are some nice porcelain shops/studios there.

Just to say we went and had such a good time! We hired a car as we heard taxis are a pain but when we got there there were lots. We went to this amazing restaurant by the river on the Friday evening and sat out. On the Saturday we went canooing which was so fun. Then we did a champagne route around the city with the old town, cathedral and made our way to the river to a restaurant , that had recently opened and ended up having a lock in until 3 am! On the Sunday we went to a chateau and there’s a Michelin recommended restaurant, that is next to the airport so we went there and had a walk and food and drinks. It was lovely . Enough to do for a weekend.

So thanks everyone for your tips!

It sounds like it has improved since I lived there, which is good to know.

Oh my. That sounds fantastic. Thanks for the update!
