Hiya, I'm looking for recommendations on where to go for a week's holiday in England in September this year.

It'll be just 2 adults who are fairly fit and in our late 40's. We will go self-catering cottage/Airbnb, NO caravan/glamping/chalet/hotel ideas thank you.

For context we LOVE Whitby and the peak district, and are considering St Ives. We are relatively fit, enjoy sightseeing, generally mooching about, wonderful scenery, people watching and in the evening like to be able to walk to a decent pub or two. We will eat out but that doesn't make or break it for us. We prefer not to use the car once we're at our destination unless for specific trips or getting the shopping in.

Looking forward to hearing where you recommend and why 😁

If you enjoy walking, have you considered doing one of the coastal paths ?

It would mean different overnights, but is a great way to spend a week.

Northumberland for sure. History, beaches, lovely wee towns, walks…

MinnieMountain · 05/08/2024 07:16

Grasmere. We did a week walking without a car. There’s a bus between it and Windermere so you can expand your range.

Southwold is the ultimate place to mooch and people watch. It’s so laid back, and very pretty too!

If you like Whitby then try St Ives or Tenby. They are both similar, built around a harbour with cobbled streets and colourful houses. They are a bit more upmarket than Whitby though I'd say.

Keswick. Great little town with plenty of places to eat, and the bus services to neighbouring towns/villages or hiking spots are good.

North Wales is spectacular, stay just outside Snowdonia national park loads to see and do

Hedgesgalore · 10/03/2025 11:09

Pembrokeshire.

If you want to leave the car then specifically Tenby would be good but lots to see in the area.

The coast path is utterly breathtaking. Lots of cottages to choose from and September is a fab time to be there.

Thanks All, we ended up in Polperro and had an absolutely stunning week. Already planning a short week/long weekend in Oct or Dec so will be looking into some of these options for then. Likely going to be preak district, lake District or possibly Northumberland....trying to limit travel time to make the most of a short break.

Keep the suggestions coming if you have them - thinking mooching/strolling/short walk (3ish hrs) days and walk to a proper pub in the evening for a few early doors, then back to a cosy cottage with a fire to snuggle down...😁

@Sunsparkles The North Norfolk coast - between the villages of Thornham and Cley-Next-The-Sea. Lots of gorgeous cottages, pubs (almost unanimously with great food) and served by the Coasthopper bus service. We walked the coastal path and got the bus back. Stunning wild unspoiled scenery

wwyd2021medicine · 01/09/2025 15:41

@RatherBeOnVacation is the north Norfolk
Path free of cows?
Does the bus run throughout the year?

I think autumn/winter would be great there for the migrating birds and thinking of it for later this year

heartsinvisiblefury · 01/09/2025 15:42

North Wales! Perfect - especially Betws y Coed

RatherBeOnVacation · 01/09/2025 18:29

@RatherBeOnVacation Yes - I have never encountered a cow on the path up there yet 😂😂😂😂. Bus runs year round and the bird life is superb. There’s several RSPB reserves on that stretch too.

I like Keswick for a base if you don’t want to use your car. There are plenty of walks you can do directly from the town (for all fitness levels) plus boat ride on the lake, the theatre by the lake, tennis courts, mini golf, leisure centre if you want a swim. Big choice of places to eat and a few shops to potter round.
