I haven't flown for 40years.I have bought a ticket where I can take a small bag and put it under the seat in front .Are they strict with the bag size or is it okay if it fits. Can I take a hand ag as well? Thank you.

Ryanair rules are strictly enforced. I suggest you check the links sent which sets out the strict measurements.

You can't take a hand bag aswell. I have never had my bag measured by Ryan Air, but wouldn't risk taking one that is bigger than the sizes permitted.

Take a fold up handbag in your hand luggage and make sure your bag doesn’t exceed the measurements. They are really strict.

I flew with Ryanair a few weeks ago. The guy behind me in the queue had has bag measured.

And no not allowed a separate hand bag, but just put your handbag in your rucksack. A small one that can be squished down is ideal

There is a "bag sizer" at the gate, which is basically a tin box into which you have to be able to shove your bag. The gate staff may be using that systematically, they may be using it if people's bags look too big, or they may not be using it at all. It seems to be a lottery.

However, if they are using it, your bag will have to fit into it, and the gate staff are very inflexible about this (I suspect they get commission on the hefty fees that you have to pay if it's too big). The allowed size is 40x25x20cm. If any of the dimensions of the bag are bigger than that, it will not fit. You can't trade 2cm of length for 2cm of width. It will also not fit if it started out the correct size and is now bulging due to being overstuffed.

The only other bag you can take is a duty free bag. This is meant to contain only items that you have just bought at the duty free shop, and it should be sealed. If they think that you are taking the mick (for example, getting on at Stansted holding a Tenerife airport duty free bag that clearly contains a jumper and a pre-used iPad), they will disallow it.

Yes they're pretty strict, they have a contraption at the gate. We sat there for half an hour watching a stream of people try and shove their bag into the available space, mostly to no avail. They then had to pay for a cabin bag.

I did see some "hack" online suggesting you can take a fully packed soft sided rucksack (that wouldn't fit in the baggage contraption when full) then buy something small and cheap from duty free and use that carrier bag to put half your stuff in before getting to the gate.

Don’t fly with Ryanair. Then they may get the messsge if people boycott them.
