Camping/driving Scandi holiday August/Sept

We've camped in the south of France and Spain and Germany over the years in these months and always had a great time (even sometimes with 6 teenagers +2 dogs )

We tend to drive, then camp a few days enjoy/explore and drive on.

This year we were thinking of heading to Nordic places instead.
We have a mini-caravan now (think old VW campervan size) and an awning for putting up if we stay longer somewhere.

I think we will need to pack a wine lake to take with us but don't know much else about Sweden/Denmark/Norway.

Do you have any advice?

Is the weather terrible at this time of year?
Are there clouds of biting insects to face?
Is there anywhere we should make sure to see?
Do all the campsites close in Sept?

Scandinavia is huge (from north to south) - and you have to get there first so you've got 400 miles from the ferry at the Hook of Holland to the Danish border. How much time will you have?

You need to decide which parts of Scandinavia you want to see. Parts of Sweden can indeed suffer from swarms of midges, but you can do some research on where and when. Norway is more rugged, but distances between towns are long. Denmark is a given - you have to drive through Denmark to get to the other countries.

If you've camped in Germany you'll find that the Danish campsites are very similar - many summer guests are from Germany. There are sites all around the Danish coasts, and some places such as harbours also have facilities for overnight campers. From the German border you could drive up the Jutland west coast and then from Frederikshavn at the top of Jutland take the ferry across to Gothenburg in Sweden.

Alternatively, drive east across Funen and Zealand towards Copenhagen, then cross the bridge to Malmo and Sweden. You could consider a trip to Bornholm, via Ystad in the south of Sweden.

If you only have a week or two, you only really have time to explore Denmark and southern Sweden, or Denmark and southern Norway. Driving further afield requires more time, assuming that you want to stop off and enjoy the sights.

Wine is expensive, so take a few bottles if that is important to you.

These are great @Havanananana !

The timing of the article is most helpful.
