Im planning to go to Langkawi with my dh and ds who's gonna be 8-9months old. Any tips on where to stay and which part of the island is best would be welcome. We are after some quiet relaxing and peaceful place with a lovely beach. Thanks

We stayed at The Andaman last year and thought it was excellent. It is half an hour from the airport by car. The hotel organise the pick-up. Great private beach and wonderful views, nice pool, all the usual restaurants and bars. My DCs enjoyed batik painting, canoeing and collecting shells. I enjoyed doing nothing.

We stayed at the Holiday Villa Beach Resort last Easter. Was nice. What's yout budget.? Think it was 3* but reasonable prices.

Fleur- thanks. It looks like a lovely hotel.
clam- does it have a beach? I was looking at Meritus Pelangi cos ~I like the traditional architecture.

Btw is it safe to bring your 8 months old baby? Is the water there safe? etc.

Lucky you - I love Langkawi.

The Andaman is fantastic. Lots of families go there.

The Datai (next door) is heaven on earth, but maybe a bit harder to do with a small child because of the number of steps. Although having said that I have seen people with small children being driven around the place by very helpful staff in golf buggies, and there is a separate pool for families near the beach.

Water is all bottled and I can't think of a reason why it would not be safe for a small baby, especially one who is young enough to be easily portable. Both of the hotels I have mentioned will find you a baby sitter on request and are good hotels so I would expect the staff to go out of their way to help you if you need anything.

ScaryHairy - Great info, thanks.

Did you go with children? If so, did you need an additional immunisation? Hepatitis A? Malaria tablets?

No, we didn't have children when we went, but in any event I did not get any jabs at all.

I loathe malaria pills (having seen them make some people go a little loopy) and always do everything I can to avoid getting bitten instead. Certainly where I was staying there was no particular problem with mozzies.

I am quite relaxed about these things though, and tend not to do them unless I am going somewhere where hygeine is likely to be a problem. A 5* hotel in Langkawi just doesn't worry me in that way! Since you are taking the baby just check with your GP, but like I said, a lot of people go there with small children (and I would, given half a chance) so I am sure it is pretty safe.

Yes. It's right on the beach - a beautiful garden in between the pool and the sand. We went at end March/early April and it was deserted. DH and I were the only ones gazing at the fantastic sunsets - not because the hotel was crap, I might add, but it was just a quiet time of year.

We have had Hep A and B vax plus typhoid, though the typhoid was for visiting India not Langkawi. We don't take malaria tablets (I live in Asia and don't know of anyone who takes them- they are ineffective and have horrible side-effects) but always spray insect repellant over arms, legs and ankles especially in the evenings. This reduces the chances of getting malaria or dengue.

zuzkah · 18/04/2008 11:45

thanks ladies
I ve learnt that malaria is not an issue in coastal areas and my ds has had his hep B vax. They don't vaccinate children under 2 years of age.
So the questin is.... Would you bring your child even without the immunisation recommended? Mind you we would stay in a 4* resort for 7 days. Would you?

Hep A vax is recommended for all Asia. I would be particularly careful of what your LO is eating if he hasn't had the vax as you can't be 100% certain of the hygiene standards of the staff (even in 5* hotels in Langkawi). I probably wouldn't take the risk with that age group but would go somewhere else. That is my feeling. I wouldn't be worried about the other vax, just hep A in Langkawi. Others may disagree of course!

We took our six week old to Langkawi and had a fabulous time. Stayed at the Frangipani resort and spa. It's about 20 mins from the airport. Not expensive but really pretty. You need to get a beachfront chalet though as you'll feel cheated if you don't have the amazing view from the front. We were put in one next to a generator but were swiftly moved when we complained. Staff were great, beach is lovely and they're an eco resort so big on recycling etc.Nice simple rooms, Lombok style and outdoor showers. If you get in touch with them they may give you a better rate than what's advertised
Health-wise for your baby, the only thing is to make sure you have some sort of UV/ insect shade for your buggy. Not many mossies around daytime, but a few at night. Quite a few restaurants and shops within a short walk and a short and cheap cab ride to much more. You'll have a brill time.

After much consideration we have decided not to go to Langkawi but straight to Australia. It wouldn't feel right as me and my dp are immunised and our ds not. Also he is going to be at that awkward age of weaning...what to feed him?...crawling...how will you stop him in the hot sand...blablabla. If we were to go now- he's 5months- that would be different.
Anyway...thanks a lot for all your tips. SOunds like a great place and I hope we will get to go latter on.
