Santorini tips?

Any advice on how to "do" Santorini?

Is it better to stay in Fira, or Oia, or somewhere else?
If not staying in one of those two, is it easy to pick up a bus or taxi for day trips?
If taking a bus to Kamari or Perissa for the beaches, do the buses run regularly to come back?
Do restaurants with views of the sunset need pre-booking?
What day trips off the island are good to do?
Any other advice I might need to know?

I stayed on the outskirts of Oia an easy walk into town and absolutely loved it, but it was some years ago. It definitely had the best views and I preferred it to Fira. Also stayed in Kamari, which was ok but there are far lovelier places on Greek islands - I think I would have felt short changed if I'd stayed there or Perissa and only visited Oia/Fira on day trips.

I would combine Santorini with another island, maybe Naxos as people suggest, and just go to Santorini for 2-3 days to see it. Also it might be worth checking the cruise ship schedules, as obviously when the big ships come in Oia and Fira are suddenly absolutely flooded with people. Not sure that can be avoided though.

We stayed on the outskirts of Fira. If we returned, we'd stay in Imerovigli.

Do the Fira to Oia hike and then bus back. Look up https://santorinidave.com/ for a detailed map of the route.

Check out the open air cinema in Kamari. I've never been to a cinema as good before or since.

We did hire a car and it was a game changer to be able to explore easily, and at any hour so I can't comment on the buses. The only time we got the bus was at the end of the hike as we'd parked in Fira. Santorini is a small island compared to the UK, but its not small. Even driving takes about an hour from end to end.

Pyrgos is beautiful and unspoiled.

The views from the monastery are incredible. You can actually see the shape of the island, and the dots of white that are Fira and Oia. You can also see planes below you, coming in to land at the airport.

The airport by the way is little bigger than a shed. Departures consists of a small kiosk and some plastic chairs.

Do a boat tour out to the volcano. We took one that also included the thermal springs. You jump from the boat and then swim to the springs which are at the shore.

The queue for the cable car back up from the port was over an hour long so we opted to walk back up. Keep your wits about you as you will play Dodge The Donkey as they come thundering down the stairs.

We went right at the beginning of October and it was perfect. It was still beautiful sunshine and warm, but not unbearably hot, and it wasn't too busy. Just enough people that it felt like it had atmosphere. Different parts of the island have their own microclimates. We were having breakfast in Kamari and were a bit chilly. Weather apps told us that it was 26° in Pyrgos, so we went there.

Can you fly direct to Naxos?

From the UK? No

Actually the airport has finally had the massive revamp that was promised for so long and is at last fit for purpose although sadly there's no smoking terrace airside any more.

Hence going via Santorini. You can fly in and out of Mykonos but we found the flights much more expensive.

Have also gone via Athens and got the ferry from there. It takes longer but it's lovely and relaxing (if the weather's good). You can also get an internal flight from Athens.

Those of you who went to watch the sunset/have dinner, were you able to get a bus back easily then, after the sun had set?

I will definitely not be riding a poor donkey! I can't believe that hasn't been banned yet.

This was the worst experience of my entire life, OP. I'm massively claustrophobic and we got a bus up (to Oia, I think?) to watch the sunset. It was incredibly hot, more and more people got on - and kept getting on. Every time it stopped on a winding mountain road more people climbed on board. They were crammed down the aisles, hanging over the top of you and I ended up crying in terror for the last 20 minutes or so, just desperate to get off the bus. I kept thinking that if there was an accident we would be utterly trapped and I couldn't breathe. People were so jammed in it was like the Black Hole of Calcutta. And it seemed endless, with the bus slowing down, stuck in traffic and squeezing past other coaches.

I appreciate that this is my issue, but we got there. Hung about in huge crowds in a restaurant we'd booked and then the mist came down just before the sun set and you couldn't see a thing.

I got the most expensive taxi ride ever back to the hotel because I utterly refused to get on a bus again.
