We are off to Brittany next week and haven't been before and so would be grateful for any tips on places to visit, beaches, restaurants etc for us and our DD, 7. Thanks!

Which part of Brittany are you going to?

Serenrose · 27/07/2024 20:14

Carnac. We are driving over so can travel around by car or public transport.

Concarneau is well worth a visit. The beaches all along that coastline are lovely - I like Beg Meil best. If you’re sailing in/out of Cherbourg then the Titanic and submarine exhibitions are superb, as is Oceanopolis at Brest

Lovely beach and estuary at Guidel but it's quite a way from Carnac.
Doelan and Pont Aven very pretty, but again, not close to Carnac.

There are lots of beautiful beaches around Carnac and Trinité sur mer and so many nice restaurants.
The standing stones at Carnac are worth visiting, but not that interesting for children. You can get a little tourist train from Carnac which is quite cute, and my DD enjoyed it at a similar age.
We did a boat trip to Belle Île from Trinité sur mer one day, which was lovely. You get the day to explore the island and its beaches.
Vannes is also worth a day trip.
We love Brittany, it is a beautiful part of France.

The oyster shacks along the coast west of town are great. Also love the beach by Sainte Barbare

We’ve just had a week at Carnac. Visited Concarneau on a previous visit when we were staying in that area. I wouldn’t bother making a trip from Carnac. There’s plenty closer by to see.

This week we have cycled a lot but my DC are teens so easier. The Carnac beaches are sheltered and lovely for a swim. Lots of ice cream and food places around. Cycle hire as well, you could hire a 4 wheel cycle and explore the promenade which is flat.

We had a great day in Vannes on a rainy day. Auray is a town close by and gorgeous, recommended. The area by the river looks like something out of a Disney film, cute half timbered houses. We had a lovely lunch at the Armoric restaurant.

The Quiberon peninsula is worth a look. At the top of the peninsula on the West side is a fabulous beach with soft sand. West facing with waves. Free easy parking. At the bottom of the peninsula Quiberon itself is lovely with a sheltered sandy beach. Lots of shops and cafes down there.

Worth checking out the Carnac stones. We did a 40 minute open top bus tour which was cheesy but fun and gave us an overview. We returned later on our bikes for another visit. You can park at The House of Megaliths which is free and has information and maps of the area. Tours of the stones start from there.

You can do boat visits to various islands but we didn’t for one because we were too busy doing other things. What we loved is that we didn’t have to travel far to fill out time. Lots to see and do in the Carnac area.

We’ve been to Brittany several times but this was our best ever visit. Loved the area.

There are different islands you can go to by boat from Quiberon, Vannes or Séné. Belle île is the biggest, Houat and Hoedic are a lot smaller with gorgeous beaches. Then there’s ile au Moines and Arz which take about 10 minutes to get to on the boat from Baden. Also there are various boat trips around the gulf du Morbihan, where you can see lots of tiny islands etc. You can also hire kayaks/paddle boards etc. to use by yourself or to go for a tour with a guide.

In Lorient there’s a submarine you can visit (le Flore? I think) I’ve never been but my DDs went on a school trip and were impressed even though they’re not usually into that kind of thing.

The road down to Quiberon gets really busy in summer and parking can be difficult but there’s a little train you can get from Auray, I think it’s still running now. It’s not a steam train or anything but feels old fashioned (in a good way!) and mainly gets used by people on holiday.

Vannes old town and Auray are nice for a walk around as others have said, and there are cinemas/bowling/etc if it rains. Also some pretty villages inland like Josselin/Rochefort en Terre and a nice photo exhibition at La Gacilly but that’s about a hour from Carnac.
