Hi - we're going on holiday in a few weeks to somerset, staying near minehead. We've got a ds who is 2. Any recommendations for days out in the area - particularly if teh weather is bad.

My children are older, but both really loved Tropiquaria which is near Watchet. Various animals outside and creepy crawlies, and fish inside. Also large indoor play area.

A bit touristy but I loved Wookey Hole when I was young.

Am sure there are lots of other things too but I can't remember.

there's a steam railway station right on the sea front in minehead that you could get on.

theres also a really nice farm at blue anchor bay. They even let my ds sit on one of their horses.

you could even get the steam train to there.

We got back from a night in Wells on Friday. Got there, did Cheddar Gorge (although not the tour/cave thing), Wookey Hole on the Thursday (we're in Oxford and it took a while to get there!). On Friday we did Wells, followed by Bath (by which time we were all too knacked to do the 1.5 hr Roman Baths tour) then back again to Oxford.

On reflection, I'd say the Cheddar tour was probably better value than Wookey (and while we were there quite a few children were screaming their heads off, far too scared to go into the caves, and they were much older than your ds). However, we had very limited time and couldn't do both.

It's a wonder how anyone can afford to go on a holiday in the UK. I know we are four but nothing we wanted to do/see came to under £70. At least with ds being 2 he won't be charged for most things.

Hope you enjoy it

What about something like this

Furball · 14/04/2008 08:05

3 hour safari = £70 for the 3 of you, blimey.

thanks all - not sure about the caves (i've got a thign about being underground). DS would love a steam railway though and i'd love the exmoor ponies.

i know what you mean 2sugars - things are so expensive here but can't face the thought of travelling more than a car's journey away with ds yet - plenty of time for planes/ferries etc when he's a bit older.

Exmoor Falconry and Animal farm is ideal for all ages. It's at Allerford which is very close to Minehead (about 10 minute drive, head towards Porlock). Apart from the falconry displays (more for adults and older children) there are loads of different farm animals for the children to pet. There is an indoor barn with lots of small animals that the children are allowed to hold. I was thrilled when I was able to hold a baby meerkat as I'd only ever seen them behind glass in a zoo, and I've got some lovely pics of dd aged about 3 helping to bottle-feed lambs. There's also a rather nice tea room as I recall.

Agree about Tropiquaria and steam railway - both fab.
