Holidays with mountain biking

Onyuk100 · 25/07/2024 19:38

Looking at doing a holiday next year including some mountain biking but also fun for kids (aged 7,6,2). The eldest is very up for mountain biking.
Any ideas for great places to go south francs/spain? Eurocamps?

Are you taking bikes with you?
The eldest, do they mtb in the uk ( assumption you’re in the uk )?
By mtb, do you mean forest trails , gravel tracks or something rougher?

Thanks, we could take mountain bikes or could rent depending on location.
He currently does mountain bike trails in the forest (blue and just started red grade). Sorry I'm not technical in mountain biking.

Huttopia Bourg st Maurice is a lovely site.

Saalbach-Hingerglemm in Austria has loads of trails and is well set up for it - some are very serious and plenty of cable cars to get you up the mountain

Just as important, Saalbach-Hinterglemm has plenty for the other children to do.

There are playgrounds at the top station of every cable car, an outdoor pool complex, moon-cars, a balance trail, treasure hunt trails on two of the mountains, a jump & slide park, mini-golf ...

If you stay in any of the approved hotels, B&Bs or appartments, they issue a free Joker Card that covers the cable cars and pool complex and some other attractions. Note that to take an MTB on the lifts requires paying a small supplement - and do take your own bikes, as bike rental is very expensive.

@Havanananana it's a perfect destination! And zip lines at the end of the valley. I love SH so much! And the food is amazing.

Havanananana · 26/07/2024 15:25

@bestbefore The high-ropes park (Europe's largest) and zip lines are indeed excellent, but I left them off the list as the OP's kids are only 7,6 and 2, so a bit small for these just yet! They could still walk across the suspension bridge and do the tree-top walk at the end of the valley - and see the goats there too.

Annecy is very nice. A lot of people bike around the lake but of course there are lots of mountains within a short drive for some serious mountain biking.
Also nice little beaches and playgrounds around the lake for children.

Look at morzine in the French alps. Great summer destination, lots to do there. There’s lots of mountain biking, also a lake with activities on, public swimming pool in the town, lots of walking. Look at alpine elements, they have chalets and hotels there and have good packages for summer.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/07/2024 17:34

YY to Morzine.
Lots to do, lots of mtb for all abilities. Plus uplift!

Onyuk100 · 26/07/2024 19:12

Thanks all will definitely look at the recommendations 😀

Most ski resorts are mtb centres in the summer.

FoodieToo · 26/07/2024 19:41

Delighted to see the positivity about Saalbach - Hinterglemm. We have skied there and Zell 3 years but thinking of doing next summer there as we went to Turkey this year and it was insanely hot .....

Any recommendations for activities for teens ?? Thinking of staying in ValSaa Alpinresort . Hoping to do lake swimming , karting, mountain walking and biking . Bike rental SO dear !!! There are 7 of us and it's 50 euro a day . Any tips ??

Thank you !!

BotterMon · 26/07/2024 19:44

Any Nielsen holiday would work as they have MB/normal bikes/sailing/paddle boarding etc all included plus a kids club for the 2 year old.

bestbefore · 27/07/2024 08:27

@FoodieToo where's that bike cost from? The hotel might have a deal with places or else look on the joker page for discounts or o google maps to see a shop in the town, there's loads as all the places which hire skis rent them. We had e bikes from our hotel & I got 8 50 year old women up the mountain on them! Smile The proper trails are v full on downhill & you need all the stuff. There's def tonnes to do, the e-bikes are great as you can cover miles & build in plenty of fab restaurants etc

bestbefore · 27/07/2024 08:28

And teens would love the zip lines end of the valley, you drive. & get a little train there

Havanananana · 27/07/2024 09:50

@FoodieToo I think that the ValSaa Alpinresort has in-house bike rental - from the same annex where they have the ski rental and Snowacademy ski school in winter. It is also an all-inclusive hotel, and has an indoor-outdoor pool.

I know that the Adler Resort in Hinterglemm (near to the Reiterkogel lift) has in-house bike hire, and I'm sure I've seen hotel bikes at the Panther'a and Saalbacherhof in Saalbach.

The hotels seem to offer basic mountain bikes and e-bikes, whereas the rental shops in the village seemed to mainly have the expensive downhill bikes for hire at eye-watering prices. If you want to know what a €9,000 MTB looks like, look at some of the bikes in Bike'n'Soul in Hinterglemm, or BikeFurst in Saalbach.

All of the activities that you've listed are available in or near to S-H. Lake swimming is at Zell am See - get there on the free bus #680 - where there are also places where you can hire paddleboards and windsurfers. There's rafting from Zell or Lofer. To reach the zip-wires and climbing park, either drive or take the #680 bus to the end of the valley at Lengau, then either take the free Noddy Train (but it only departs once and hour) or walk up to the park, which takes about 30-40 minutes. Walk past the big hotel, along the lane, through the car park and then keep the river on your left-hand side as you walk up the trail.

NuffSaidSam · 27/07/2024 09:53

I was also going to recommend Austria, great biking, hiking, swimming, water fun opportunities.

FoodieToo · 27/07/2024 10:26

Thanks so much for advice . Sorry for coming in on your thread OP !

Despite being a very nice hotel , ValSaa definitely does not have bikes . She said for ‘insurance reasons’ !!

They do offer 15 percent off a local bike shop but it happens to be one of the dearer ones ! Looks like I’ll just have to cough up !!

My kids are all golfers and golf in Zell am See is 55 euro for a round plus 60
club hire .
