DC passport - renew just in case?

I'm sure it's fine but I'm very much out of my comfort zone with this one!!

DC passport due for renewal Jan 2025. Going to the Balearics end of Aug and on return date will have 5 months left on a 5 year passport.

All websites state requirement is more than 3 months left on date of return. So we're ok aren't we? I know we are. DH says we are but I'm wondering whether to renew NOW just to be on the safe side?!

You’re in more danger of not getting get the passport back on time. Just renew when you get back.

PandorasTin · 21/07/2024 08:41

Its fine.

tanstaafl · 21/07/2024 08:42

It’s valid. Keep hold of it.

For adult passports the important date is 10 years after the start date (must have at least 3 months left before that, NOT the expiry date.)

Not sure what the rule is for juvenile passports.

PuttingDownRoots · 21/07/2024 08:44

If the rules say 3 months, then 5 months is fine.

There hasn't been chaos this year... but I wonder how much of the previous years chaos was caused by people renewing just in case, when the passport was actually fine.

I'd probably renew it now just so I didn't forget. DS renewal came back in less than a week last month so it's all working pretty well at the moment.

Passports aren't cheap why would you get a new one before you need to?

@BarcardiWithGadaffia But you'd have to pay the same in September if you renew when you come back - if it's a cash flow issue, fine, but it doesn't cost anything more really. You might be shortening a passport life by 6-8 weeks but that's a tiny amount of money, about £3.

If the passport is used regularly maybe. Used once a year... it makes more sense to renew it a few months before it is needed!

TheBlackCatWithTheWhiteSpot · 21/07/2024 08:55

If you renew now you might not get it back in time.

And in 5 years time it will expire in August, so if you want a summer holiday you’ll have to renew it early, so actually you’ll be losing about a year’s worth of validity altogether.

Obviously but you pay for 5 years , why would you not use the maximum time you could before staring the time again, thats wasting money. Surely the most sensible way to get passports is to use them for the maximum time and then apply for a new one before your next holiday

You dont need one if the child isnt going anywhere for another 12'months

Portfun24 · 21/07/2024 08:59

I can't remember if children get extra months added on to a child's passport if you renewed early like you used to with adults. If the passport is exactly 5 years from issue to expiry date then you are absolutely fine, do not stress at all about it.
