First thing is a tent!
You will need one with 2 bedrooms and a decent amount of living space you can stand up in. Some have bedrooms at one end, and look like tunnels, others have a bedroom at each end with living space and door in the middle. (See photos!)

Modern tents are ok to put up- but practice at home first!

Bedding: self inflating mattress are good and pretty comfortable, put layers of blankets underneath, to insulate the floor, then a sleeping bag with another blanket over the top.

Plastic storage boxes for food and cooking utensils. A couple of gas burners for cooking. A cool box, saucepans, plates, cutlery ect.

Table and chairs (folding) as it gets v uncomfortable doing everything on the floor!

Wellies/ crocs, quick drying waterproofs ( always best to be prepared in the uk!) a torch and battery lamp for nighttime.

Be prepared for the midnight rush to the loo (crocs and a torch!) or have a bucket with lid for the kids.

There are all sorts of camping gadgets you can get, but that depends on your budget!

Perhaps borrow one or go somewhere with ready erected tents for your first time?
We have had some great holidays camping!

Check with go outdoors if they have any tents on offer. We got a brilliant tent nearly half price because someone had bought it, something minor, think it was a buckle broke and they returned it. We had the repaired one and it's great.

A word of caution though, you end up buying so much stuff camping gets expensive.

An extra shelter is a fab thing to have as you can eat under the shelter

We also have a small plastic box with games in case of rain

To enjoy camping you do need quite a lot of stuff and a big boot / roof box otherwise it's all a bit basic and no one gets any sleep and you spend a fortune eaten out!

I fucking LOVE IT but just trying to set your expectations of what might be involved. The first year is hard work & expensive to get everything together but once it's all packed away it's very easy to go again.

SunmerSazz · 20/07/2024 22:20

I'd recommend An air beam tent. They are heavier, but oh so easy!

You need a tent that is designed for at least 2 more people than will be using it. So I'd be looking at 6-8 man tents. DD and I have a 4 man between us and it's perfect

Thank you all. It's only for like once a year/ twice with sons football tours he only joined this year don't think they go above and beyond something basic to sleep In as be eating out as it's the weekend or BBQs . Just a tent sleeping bags and blankets. Is only for us to do when we go on yours for weekends that's all. We might like it then we could buy more as time goes by.

Look on Facebook market place. People are often selling their whole set up.

Start v basic and then build as you go. Enjoy.

Buzzbaby · 21/07/2024 11:23

But aslong as you got tent and sleeping bags that basically it for the basics

I'd suggest you get sleeping mats too. The ground is very uncomfortable!!
