Perth to Ningaloo reef one week

Australianholiday · 14/07/2024 20:05

We are doing a rd trip in a campervan from Perth to Ningaloo reef, we got 7 days to go there and back. The plan is to stop in Cervantes one night, one night in monkey mia, 3 nights ningaloo reef, then back one night in Calvary and another night not too far from Perth, one hour.

Has anyone done something similar? Any advice? Does the itinerary looks ok?

The trip is in August.

TIA

Another Aussie here. I strongly advise you to take two confident drivers. Long hours on Australian country roads are very tiring. Driver fatigue is a contributing factor in 20 - 30 per cent of serious road accidents here. The figure is higher if you discount metropolitan accidents.

Thank you. We booked this trip last year including the camper-van but only thinking it properly now and we have just a few weeks to go.

The options are:

Asking DH sister or brother to come with us, they live in Australia and used to drive there DH is a confident driver but it is a long drive and will be jet lagged, that’s the reason to have 3 overnight stop overs on the way there.

Bite the bullet, only do the rd trip to Kalbarri and back to Perth and fly to Ningaloo. Will check if we can get a refund for the days we are not using the campervan.

We went as far as Coral bay and did one night stay in wooramel on the way up...stayed 4 nights and then stayed in Geraldton on rhe way down.

I do not recommend wooramel. I have nightmares about the bugs!!!

Also don't think you would really need a night in lancelin it's not that far from perth.i would rather keep driving after seeing the pinnacles. Be really aware of how quick thunderstorms can happen too op. Someone I know got stuck because the road flooded quickly.

Give yourselves more time if you do something like thsi again….1 night in singapore you won’t even get a taste of it…..and all that driving and being on the go in WA is gonna be exhausting….you will probs come home wondering what you’ve actually seen apart from the interior of the camper van….. the driving in Australia is very boring. But like you say all booked now so make the most of it.

you’ve only 2 nights in Perth …but take the train out to Fremantle for a few hours if you can…..weekend is best in Fremantle markets will be open

Edited

The night in Singapore is only to break the trip and sleep. We have already been there

We have a week in the middle in Sydney to recover and see family. We have been there a few times so won’t be doing much.

Will check the train to Fremantle.

By Lancelin do you mean Cervantes,l? we are not staying overnight there. We will head to Geraldton and stay there overnight.

No idea where Wooramel is; will make sure we don’t go there.

Apologies I meant cervantes but Lancelin was in my head because we went there first.

Thank you. Are Thunderstorms expected all year? Will August be a good month?

Regarding the whale sharks, and we went maybe 18yrs ago so appreciate things may well have changed!

We went from Exmouth but they did it from Coral Bay then also. Most, not all, companies offered a 2nd trip if you didn't see them on the day. I'd therefore try to book the whale shark trip earlier on in your stay in either Exmouth or Coral Bay, so if you miss them, you might have time for a 2nd trip.

Thanks for the tip; we booked the first day we are there so hopefully get another chance if we don’t see them on first day

Thank you. We were thinking of going South but I think is a bit cold that time of the year.

Thank you all. We are stuck with the original plan of driving there as tickets are 1,100 usd per person to Ningaloo; everything is booked and we can’t change anything.

We are stopping over for one night in Geraldton and one night in Kalbarri, 3 nights in Ningaloo reef. We will have short breaks from Kalbarri to Exmouth.

On the way back we are stopping over for a night in Kalbarri and another one in Ledget point as DH wants to see something there.

We will start driving as early as possible. I hope it will be bit a nice adventure in the campervan.

Never been in a campervan so if anyone have ideas of what to take, where to eat, other tips for this rd trip that would be greatly appreciated.

Can you really rely on the timings you get in google or are the rds busy, blocked.

You need a Telstra sim for your phones. Other carriers don’t have the coverage. https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/our-coverage.

while in Perth, go here https://www.wavisitorcentre.com.au/ for all your brochures and leaflets.

Wanneroo shops are on your way to Indian Ocean Drive. Stop here. https://www.wanneroocentral.com.au/. Coles supermarket opens at 8. Also Salvation Army charity shop across the car park and St Vincent de Paul across the road for various bits and pieces.

Invest in a cheap, scratchy door mat, camping chairs www.kmart.com.au/search/?searchTerm=camping+chair and talcum powder because it’s good at getting dry, crusty sand off your feet. A spray bottle of aeroguard for insect repellent. Kmart is at Wanneroo.

I did this trip as part of a much longer trip in May/June 2021. Let me know if you want any camp/caravan park recommendations!

WhisperGold · 17/07/2024 10:12

I'd stop in Monkey Mia. Too much driving in one week unless you love driving down a dusty road.

Thanks; we have discarded Monkey Mia. Only stopping a Geraldton and Kalbarri for overnight stays

We actually booked proper accommodation for 3 nights in Exmouth for a proper rest/break so won’t be sleeping in the campervan those 3 nights.

I am getting more excited and less nervous now.

Your van may come with towels. Get another set for the beach. Rashies for everyone https://www.kmart.com.au/search/?searchTerm=rash. I have a large long sleeves zip up that lives in the car for driving.

You will need sunscreen on your face and neck all the way up as you are driving into the sun. Also, any arm and leg that has sun on it. Ears, too, especially if you are cap wearers.
