Autumn European city break - can't decide

Planning a 3/4 day trip late October, will be two adults and one 11 year old. 11 year old is great at walking around cities and fairly interested in cultural stuff so long as there're a few fun kid activities thrown in!

Have narrowed cities down to Berlin, Copenhagen and Amsterdam. Which would you all recommend for a short, interesting break with plenty to do and good food? Thank you Smile

Anyone any advice on which European city to visit? Might consider Paris too Grin

Krakow

Of your list, Berlin sounds most interesting.

May I suggest Munich? I’m taking DS who will be 11 that week for October half term. We’re going to the Deutsches Museum (massive science museum), BMW Welt and Erding thermal water park. Plus the Englische Garten, the Viktuellen Markt and Bier Kellers.

Berlin. Such an interesting city.

Krakow

Might wait for DC to be a bit older and do this closer to Christmas.

They are all nice cities but in October will be wet, cold and miserable.

I love Amsterdam and Berlin but October isn't the best time to visit them.

What about Lisbon or Athens?

Wishimaywishimight · 13/07/2024 12:47

Lisbon is my favourite European city.. We were there in early october a couple of years ago and it was beautiful, t-shirt wearing, eating outside weather.

So much bigger than I had expected and wonderful to walk around, wandering up steps and finding cute little bars, loads of great restaurants, some with (traditional - fado?) music playing. Loved it!

Not necessarily. We've been to Efteling, theme park close to Amsterdam, a couple of times in October and always had decent weather. Berlin is also fairly dry in October and mid teens temperature wise suits me much more for walking round a city than warmer temperatures. I'm from a northern part of the Uk which is very wet and cool most of the year so all of these places will likely be better weather than at home!

Copenhagen - is my favourite out of your list. We took 3 kids in February half-term. Yes, it was dark and cold, but we still had a great time. Easy to walk places, felt safe, amazing food choices and lots of cultural sights to see.

If they like art, definitely Amsterdam.
If they like modern history, Berlin.
Otherwise, I'd say Copenhagen or Munich.

Berlin or Copenhagen.

If your DC has any interest in the history then Berlin is great. Book a walking tour and make sure to book the Reichstag in advance. You can also visit the Olympia stadion via metro. The architecture of it is amazing even when you have no interest in football. And it will be even more special if england win tomorrow!

Copenhagen would also be fab. I've been in October - check the dates for the Halloween season at Tivoli gardens - and time your visit to make sure you are there for part of it at least after dark - it's amazing. I want to go back with DC. It's a very manageable size city with great transport. If no one has a fear of heights climb the spire round the outside of the steeple at church of our saviour. Such a short flight too. Can do a speedy day trip to Malmö if you have a DC who likes to check off countries on a list. Or if you enjoy scandi noir, it's over 'The Bridge'.

I liked Amsterdam well enough as an adult but a lot of what we saw was a bit seedy. Perhaps it's possible to avoid, I went pre-DC. It would be my bottom choice of your 3.

Alternative suggestion - Budapest is amazing. So much to see and do in a very compact centre. At 11 DC is old enough for the thermal baths and lots of interesting history from war and time of soviet rule. It's more special/spectacular a city than any of your other options due to the river and architecture either side. And much cheaper as a tourist as not on the euro.
