Dubai

Can anybody give me info on Dubai holidays?

Couple in 60s. Want relaxation and things to do. Feel quite negative about it, then hear good things, so very undecided.

Worthwhile?

All Inclusive?

I need people to tell me all the bad bits or really sell it to me.

Thank you 😊

Too hot
Abuse of women and minorities
Flashy and trashy
Full of people I have no wish to be around.

ChilliPB · 11/07/2024 08:50

Wouldn’t go there and support their economy due to their awful human rights record.

In the news this week:

So many nicer places to go where there’s more to do and they don’t criminalise being gay, being raped, being mentally unwell.

There's loads of better alternatives. How about Thailand?

Fatcaterpillar · 11/07/2024 09:08

@PrincessMee would love to, but I would want to see lots of places and it would be too much for OH.

I think there's too much there to just stay in one place.

I think you could choose somewhere more relaxing than Dubai. Who had the interest first ? Would your husband manage such a long flight ?

squashyhat · 11/07/2024 09:14

I visited on a stopover for a few days to break up flying home from Japan. There's really not much to do. Once you have been up the Burj Khalifa, marvelled at the huge mall (if that's your sort of thing) done a boat trip on the Creek and tried to avoid the very persistent stall holders in the souks - that's it. And it's extremely hot and expensive besides the human rights issues. I would not go again.

Mrsjayy · 11/07/2024 09:16

Apparently it's too hot in summer I think everyone stays undercover where they can. Its not really somewhere I've fancied.

DappledThings · 11/07/2024 09:18

What sort of things do you want to do and see? And what about Thailand would be "too much"

For an interesting holiday where you aren't just lying on a sun lounger or shopping I can't think what Dubai would offer.

If you give a bit more detail on tje sort of things you're interested in people can give you loads of suggestions.

Jennywren8 · 11/07/2024 09:19

Abu Dhabi is nicer and less trashy and you could visit Dubai for a day

Fatcaterpillar · 11/07/2024 09:22

My OH could not be active every day, so we have decided we want somewhere we can have maybe alternate days out. The flight he will cope with somehow.

I love the idea of Thailand from just Bangkok, historical Chiang Mai, elephants and beautiful beaches. To me it would be perfect to have lots of busy days, followed by some chill days, but it's not going to work.

Well if you fancy Dubai just book it, if you can afford to go then why not you seem resigned to it. People telling you don't go won't change your mind. You know all the negatives of Dubai.

Isthiscorrect · 11/07/2024 09:27

Sigh this happens every time someone posts about Dubai.

It's a very easy place to holiday and far more to do than pp mentioned. Jebel Hafet, Hajar Mountains, Sheik Zayed Mosque, the ghost village, dolphin watching. The Sheik Mohamed centre for cultural
Understanding. Sharjah museums. Dubai Opera house. La Perle show. Al Serkal for contemporary art. Camel racing.

Don't do all inclusive, so many restaurants to choose from, from local fish restaurants in porta cabins, Pakistani and philipino cafeterias, thali and street food. And of course any number of Michelin starred restaurants.
Yes it's hot in the summer. Probably 45 degrees at the moment. But autumn and spring are perfect. Winter is too chilly for me for sunbathing and swimming.

longdistanceclaraclara · 11/07/2024 09:29

Go to Oman instead.

Mrsjayy · 11/07/2024 09:29

That sounds quite busy for the Op husband.

pambeesleyhalpert · 11/07/2024 09:29

I went to Dubai, we had a great time. Stayed in the Fairmont the Palm and it was beautiful! Went in march so it wasn't too hot either

Fatcaterpillar · 11/07/2024 09:31

@Mrsjayy I think you've mis-read. I'm asking people to sell it to me.

I don't fancy it, but lots recommend and go there.

We had a lovely holiday there in October. The weather was perfect. We stayed at Le Royal Meridien which was beautiful, with great food on the dine around half board. Alcohol is very expensive.
We did Burj Khalifa (book coffee in the clouds at Atmosphere restaurant for an easy option). Sunrise desert trip, Museum of the Future and the water park on the Palm.

Fernleigh22 · 11/07/2024 16:22

I've been twice and absolutely loved it.

The heat is dry - not sweaty and claustrophobic. The sun really warms the pools and sea so you can swim LOTS! The hotel we stayed at people were literally doing lengths at the beach!

The gold souks are wonderful. The sellers do not harrass you at all - their goods sell easily so they don't need to! One of the best places to buy gold or diamonds.

The mall is a great day out, huge shops and burj Khalifa. Not done the aquarium but heard its not that great. Stay late and see the fountain show. It gets very crowded because it is incredible but no one drinks so not rowdy at all!!

Museum of the future is a fun afternoon out.

We generally use the holiday to chill out and relax rather than cram lots in. The hotels are of a high standard and excellent service.

I haven't seen any trashyness to Dubai but then maybe it depends what area you stay in 🤷🏼‍♀️ We go to Deira.

For sight seeing, adventure, culture holidays, Dubai is not the place to go. But for sun and chill = perfect

Wimbledoner · 11/07/2024 17:25

I’ve been to Atlantis the Palm twice, the first time with tweens for four nights and then I returned there with my DH for five nights.
We visited Burj Khalifa, watched the fountains, went for walks, went into the desert, visited a museum and souk, went on a boat trip, the monorail and visited the water park on both trips. The lazy river is great for all ages, had lots of lovely food, spa treatments, did paddle boarding, went on a massive car thing in the sea plus did the usual chilling, swimming etc.

I would definitely go back.

By the way why doesn’t Egypt get the same hate with their staggeringly high rate of FGM?

1yearplan · 11/07/2024 17:30

I find Dubai really trashy (sorry to those who like it) I much prefer Abu Dhabi

Radiatorvalves · 11/07/2024 17:48

I’ve been a few times. And I’d go again if circumstances meant it was an easy option (a friend lived there). It’s clean and if you don’t go height of summer the climate is nice. There’s things to do but chilling by the pool and eating good food is easy. I’d suggest a day in Abu Dhabi. The Mosque is incredible and I loved wondering up the Corniche. The museums are good. Suspect water parts won’t be your thing but they are brilliant (I’m 50s!)

I think there's too much there to just stay in one place.

I don't understand this. If you went to Koh Samui it's a small island.

Fatcaterpillar · 12/07/2024 17:11

@PrincessMee if we get to Thailand I want to see more than one area. I think we would only have one chance.

At the moment it's looking like we are booking Thailand which is very exciting.
