Yorkshire holiday with toddlers!

Hi all,

My family and I are going to be staying near Northallerton for a week on holiday. We'll have a 3 year old, 1.5 year old and 1 year old with us. The 1.5 year old and 1 year old are still buggy bound a lot of the time.

Been looking at the Forbidden Corner and Lightwater Valley but not sure how suitable they are for the younger ones. Wondering if there are any locals with any insider knowledge on the best places to take them for day trips!

Thanks!

It's been a while but my DD loved both those attractions at 10 ish. Not sure about the very little ones but I'm sure there will be things for them to enjoy. They are both nice places.

Lightwater valley is ideal for little ones - in fact they've taken out most of the 'thrill' rides.

Forbidden corner is great but not really buggy friendly - can you have them in a carrier?

SaffyWall · 09/07/2024 10:47

Newby Hall is good fun with little ones - there's a small train, parks, fountains to play in and lots of gardens to explore.

Pootles34 · 09/07/2024 10:48

Oh I forgot - newby hall is near there, they have lots for kids, some of which yours will be too small for, but they'll love the little railway they have there.

Monk Park Farm is good. Lots of animals, play areas, bouncy pillows, train rides etc…

Newuser75 · 09/07/2024 12:02

I wouldn't take such young kids to forbidden corner. It's a great place but a little scary in parts for the little ones.

Lightwater valley is good
Flamingo land
Newby hall
Fountains abbey for a run around
Yorkshire wildlife park

Newuser75 · 09/07/2024 12:02

Oh and Stockeld park is amazing!

Newuser75 · 09/07/2024 12:03

And if you want to travel slightly further afield beamish is great or plenty of places up in Northumberland including Alnwick and bamburgh castle , barter book, farne islands

Avatartar · 09/07/2024 12:06

forbidden Corner may be a bit scary in parts for youngsters but plenty scope for walking around and avoiding those bits

IMO they are far too young to enjoy the forbidden corner.
It's really quite scary in parts and I don't see the benefit of paying entrance just to use the park.
A day in Scarborough on the North Bay? The little train is lovely and the beach. They are probably too young for the Sea Life Centre.
I would just keep it simple at that age. Buckets and sandcastles or parks and picnics.

Thanks so much for all your responses! Seems there are loads of options for us! Newby Hall looks great. Think we will probably save the forbidden corner for another time. Now all we need is some sunshine haha ;)

There's a railway museum at Shildon Home | Locomotion or you're not far from York and the national railway museum if they like trains.

Thorp Perrow is nice for little ones and has a nice cafe.

If you get a decent weather day, Sandsend beach is a lovely "bucket and spade" beach for little ones. You could drive into Whitby for fish and chips afterwards.

SaffyWall · 11/07/2024 10:10

There's a lovely place for fish and chips in Sandsend (the fish tacos are amazing!)

Try Ripon too. Some lovely parks, Spa Gardens, with a cafe, gorgeous food, indoor outdoor seating and a mini golf. Across the road Spa Park, with a small adventure play.
Lovely little canal boat for a short ride.
