No interest in travelling post-pandemic

This is one of those 'Is this just me, or...' posts.

Before the pandemic I loved travelling. My family and I would go to France or Italy 2 or 3 times a year. We love Bordeaux in particular. However, since Feb 2020 I haven't been anywhere. Been to places around the UK - Lake District, the Highlands - but just totally lost interest in flying. DH and the kids have been on short trips, but I just don't miss it. It's not that I'm scared of anything, but airports are a pain in the arse and I don't know if the enforced break during Covid has been some kind of cold turkey, but I'm happier staying where I am (and it's not a Little England Reform thing!). I can't quite explain it. So is this just me, or does anyone else feel this?

I'd happily stay in the uk if it weren't for the weather. This week is 16 degrees and raining every day where I am and I can't bear it. I was in Spain last week where it was 30 every day and I feel so good for having had some warmth and sunshine.

Not me! I did enjoy discovering areas of the UK we wouldn't otherwise have gone to in 2020 and regularly have UK breaks but I would definitely miss my out of season sunshine if I didn't go abroad .

Yep, me too! Recently been on trips in UK after becoming OTT about hygiene, shared items in hotel rooms. Not sure about planes anymore. It’s mostly overthinking around health for me as well as innate laziness.

I get it and love this country. When the weather is good it’s the best but I like active holidays so too much heat is a killer. So majority staycations in UK hiking with the dogs for me.

But I can’t give up the ski holiday but I only go to Europe.

And I have started doing a cheap and cheerful vit D winter sun break. That’s my MH prescription.

The pandemic had the opposite effect for me.

We've always enjoyed travel but having a sudden restriction imposed on us has made me realised that life is short and unpredictable and we've prioritised having adventures with the kids while we can.

Since 2020, we've been to some amazing places and have more planned (Botswana this year, Japan next year!)

PotOfTulips · 09/11/2024 07:19

Definitely not just you, @vikkivix - I feel similar and know several others who might say the same. The bother with airports - as PP have said - is a big part of what puts me off.

I'm the same op. Have spent the years since the pandemic exploring our amazing country and visiting the bits I've never been too. It's a mixture of can't be arsed with the hassle but also a growing awareness of how selfish to the planet air travel is especially. All these people proclaiming they eating less meat and buying river etc and then flying abroad twice a year.....

Ecover not river, FFS.

The pandemic had the opposite effect for me.

That is the same for me, I’ve been to 60 countries and have decided I want to try and visit 100.

Not at all. In fact we managed 2 holidays in 2020 - France and NL (we live in Belgium) and then had a relatively normal trip to to France and Italy in 2021. Since then I have just continued as normal. I have avoided flying though as much as possible and have done the last 4 or 5 holiday trips by train. We flew to Sicily last year and both got covid somewhere on the way home. Conscious of the need to use more sustainable travel due to climate change - especially as I have to travel for work where flying is expected.
