Ryanair Compensation

A few weeks ago I posted asking about applying for compensation for a delayed flight with Ryanair. I thought I would update you.
At the start of June, our flight to Malaga was delayed by 5 hours. This meant that we didn't get to our apt until 4.00am. I applied on our return for compo under EU261 and 2 weeks later I have received the compensation of £676, (€800) for 2 delayed flights. The flights cost £440 for 2 of us, return. Whilst I am pleased to be paid so quickly, it does seem odd to get 3 times the cost of the flight back. So, moral. If your flight is delayed. Check what your are owed and claim.

It's a fixed amount: €250 for flights up to 1500km, €400 up to 3500km, €600 beyond that. It's to compensate you for your lost time and other incidental expenses, which are independent of what the flight cost. It also means that economy class passengers get the same compensation as the people in business class, which is probably evidence that the EU are socialists or something.

Of course, if your plane had been cancelled rather than delayed you would have got the exact ticket price back too.

I am grateful for it. The actual extra costs for us were 6 months earlier. The flight was originally scheduled earlier in tge day, so we would have travelled to our destination on the bus for about €10. They changed the flight time 3 times, later each time, so we had to book a taxi costing €90. It's annoying, but not really complaining, we know Ryanair have 30 odd planes on order which haven't been delivered, so understand. The thing that made us laugh us they gave us a refreshment voucher worth £3 each. The cheapest tea was £3.75. After hearing lots of complaints about Ryanair we were really pleased at how quickly they dealt with this

Did you find out the reason for the delay? Last Thursday my flight to Bucharest was delayed by 7 hours and I lost the first night in our hotel as we didn't arrive until 8am the next morning. I put in a claim with wizz under those regulations and they have rejected it with no reasons.

BumBumCream · 04/07/2024 19:02

I was wondering what the reason for the delay was too. My flight with easyJet was cancelled and I have put in the EU261 claim but from looking online I think it might be refused as the flight was cancelled for weather reasons?

Lincslady53 · 06/07/2024 19:09

We have no idea what the delay was. We had to wait for a flight to come in from Reus,, so our original plane was nowhere to be seen. They do have lots of get outs, I don't think you get anything for things deemed out of the control of the operator, such as weather, or the problems at Birmingham the other week. I was pleasantly surprised they didn't have a reason not to pay.

Put your flight details into this website and it will tell you if you're eligbible:

https://www.flightclaims.co.uk/

If it was weather related you get nothing. If it was delayed due to eg staff shortage then this website will have it logged and you can submit another claim citing this.

Because way back the powers that be in EU brought in 261, not really to compensate passengers, but fine those operators who appeared to cancel flights at short notice simply because the commercial load didn’t justify operating the service.

It’s led to a growth industry in claiming comp which I’m not sure always works in favour of the passenger. In the event of a delay the operator always get stung for three figure plus comp at the three hour plus point, regardless of any attempt by the airline at customer service (e.g providing accommodation /food), so they have less incentive to do so, but I don’t blame people for claiming.

Be interesting to see the wash up in terms of comp from the July 4 delays to Cancun that TUI experienced due to forecast weather.

Not always true. I managed to get it on weather as the argument was that the flight was cancelled due to not having a plane ready for stand by. This was in cold weather and I saw other airlines had managed to get their flights off the ground so I argued that it was their planning rather than just pure weather that was the reason.

I'd look at Martin Lewis' template for compensation and just tweak it, then send a hard copy recorded to head office rather than just submit online.

Received my comp within 2 weeks.

Well glad it worked out for you but I hope it was genuinely and properly established that this was simply down to lack of an aircraft rather than the weather.

FWIW as a general point Cold weather operations can be highly problematic, companies can have different acceptable criteria and rules, so what other flights do is irrelevant.

One of the reasons 261 generally doesn’t award comp for weather is to discourage management from interfering in decisions that might effect flight safety.

We were delayed for four hours yesterday coming home from Mallorca - no reason given. It was a TUI package but the flight was operated by BA. As far as I can see we need to claim from BA rather than TUI, is that right? Trouble is the BA online form won't recognise our booking ref (presumably because it's a TUI ref) and the form won't let you proceed - any suggestions how to make a claim in those circumstances?
TIA.

LlynTegid · 07/07/2024 21:44

I am glad to read you were paid reasonably quickly.

Please make this your last ever flight with Ryanair.

Soberfutures · 07/07/2024 22:28

@roses2 have u used that website does it cost. Or should I speak to the airline? Sorry for jumping on. Thanx

Somewhere in your emails from TUI there should be a booking reference to use with BA - it will be the email called something like e-tickets.

I think!

That's great to hear @Lincslady53. Our flight in 2018 from Birmingham to Cork was delayed by 3 hrs and we got back €250 and I think £3 or £4 vouchers as well. The return flight cost less than €120.
Recently went to Liverpool and both flights were delayed by an hour each way.

Unfortunately, on many routes there's no choice of operator. It's a choice between a direct Ryanair flight or getting multiple flights or a layover, which would take more time and money. One thing for a holiday where you can choose another destination, but no choice for flights which are to visit family.

Why? Just because one flight was delayed?

You can only use TUI claim if you had a flight number thats TOM otherwise you have to go through the correct carrier.

Yes that website costs if you use them to claim so only use it to check if your flight is eligible.

If yes then follow the instructions here of how to claim for free:
