I know, it's short notice and I'm winging it, but I may be in a position to be looking for a last-minute holiday prob in early august, and Im not the most experienced at package and beach holidays so hoping MNers might have great recommendations. We would need:
• Not crazy hot if poss, though I know that's not easy to predict
• Nice, clean, safe, shallow but swimmable beach
• Not v. expensive ideally (self-catering, camping/cabins or hotel all fine, except not the kind of camping where we have to bring stuff)
• Some kind of town with restaurants, markets etc so easy to get food/eat out
• Ideally not mainland spain as been there 2 years running
• Manageable for elderly granny, i.e. easy to get around, not v steep etc

I'm not asking people to do the research, but if you happen to know of a great option just to chuck it this way! TIA.

Try Lagos or Tavira in the Algarve

Thank you!

El Pinar Hotel, Cala Llonga, Ibiza. It's on the beach, bus & boats to bigger towns like Santa Eulalia & Ibiza town if you want to explore further

Two years ago I took my teen 14 and mum 75 to Sidari in Corfu. Lovely shallow sandy beach, bars and restaurants but quiet parts too. Lots of Tui excursions, ie bbq boat trips and coach trips to beauty spots.
It's low key and not expensive but they loved it.
Very hot though in August. Definitely sitting under a parasol sort of weather.

cherryassam · 30/06/2024 18:34

How warm would be happy with it being?

VibeOnWithMyGalPals · 30/06/2024 18:36

I’d also suggest one of the Algarve towns

MrsWhattery · 30/06/2024 19:10

Thanks so much everyone, keep em coming! I had actually looked at a place in Sidari, I like the idea of Corfu but I know it might be hot. The thing is teen wants hot, but I'd rather it wasn't over 30 but I know heatwaves can and prob will happen. I've been in Italy when it was 40, we survived but it was too hot. It would only be for a few days though and I think we'd be mostly in the sea.

Most place in early august will be over 30….you be looking at Bordeaux maybe ….would be around late 20s?

What about Canaries? We went Lanzarote last summer and it was quite breezy. We stayed in Playa de Los Pocillos. Great little resort with some shops/bars/restaurants within walking distance and only a couple of euros in a taxi to Puerto Del Carmen if we wanted anything busier. Plus point was it was near the airport so no long transfer, we used to sit outside a bar on an evening watching the planes coming in to land.

SwedishEdith · 30/06/2024 19:19

North Belgian coast. Only thing it doesn't have from your list is guaranteed hot weather.

SwedishEdith · 30/06/2024 19:20

Or Italian Lakes.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/06/2024 19:22

Teen - Ibiza
Granny - Warners Hotel (anywhere)
You - sit home, jim-jams, bottle(s) of wine, chocolates, tranquility.

cherryassam · 30/06/2024 19:26

Istria in Croatia is often not as sweltering in August, it’s a lovely part of the world but the beaches might be too pebbly / rocky

Would you be happy renting a car?

samarrange · 30/06/2024 19:34

Look at Sa Coma in Majorca. Teen can get the bus to Cala Millor for "liveliness".

Likemyjealouseel · 30/06/2024 19:38

Would you consider a lake? Garda, Como, Neusidlersee, Lake Baloton, Attersee, Traunsee

MrsWhattery · 30/06/2024 19:46

Ideally not car, I can drive but zero experience driving abroad and granny and teen would not make it less stressful. I'd LOVE to do Italian lakes, but not sure I could sell that to teen.

Was going to suggest Lake Garda along with a couple of PPs
It's an easy flight, nice for swimming, not too hot, lots to do and a range accommodations across price points

You can do it on public transport. Idk about the teen but I find the Italian lakes a bit more glamorous than the beach. Perhaps there’s a convincing instagramer or tiktoker?

If your not against camping sites staying in static or lodge type accomodation lots of lovely sites in South of France with direct beach access. Fly into either Beziers or Perpignan and short transfer away

Agree, re Lanzarote. Always a nice breeze and Puerto del Carmen is only 10 mins in a cab from the airport. Also the island has a good bus service. Long promenade you can walk along as well.

Quarteira, Portugal. Shortish flight, cooler than Greece or Turkey. Enough going on to keep a teen happy. Get B&B in a hotel, then there are plenty of small bars and restaurants to try. Market towns to explore. A water park a few km inland. Decent beach.

Heatherbell1978 · 01/07/2024 07:36

In August Italy and South of France could easily hit 40! I've been there a few times in recent years in July and it's been around that temperature.
You really need to stick to the north if temperature is a thing. What about somewhere like The Hague? Beautiful beach, town, quick flight etc.

MojoDojoCasaHouse · 01/07/2024 07:37

We did a holiday camp at LakeGarda with my teens two years ago. We drove but loads of people fly. My teens said it was the best holiday we’ve done. What wouldn’t your teen like about it? It was hit though, 35 ish most days.

MrsWhattery · 01/07/2024 10:43

Thanks so much, these are all great and giving me loads to consider. I think teen just wants to do a seaside package type holiday because that’s her idea of a holiday - we have mainly not done that before but did the last two years, but for reasons to do with friends we ended up going to the same area twice over. Of course I understand you can get all the same water, cafe, pool etc experiences at lake Garda plus it’s cooler, but she would be hard to convince (she’s not the most reasonable person atm, long story but the teen years have been tough so far)

she’d love to go to Greece or lanzarote so the canaries suggestions are v interesting too.
