1 year oldest first holiday in Turkey in August

Edit - subject supposed to say 1 year olds first holiday......

Hi,

New here.

Hoping someone can help. We are considering joining our friends on a holiday to Turkey at the Rixos Sungate in Antalya.

We have a 1 year old, who was born with facial issues when she was born mainly concerning her eyes. Although she's had a lot of surgery already and spent 2 months in hospital since birth, she is developing well and is otherwise a typical little girl.

Having said that, she has been sheltered a little more than we would have had she not had these issues, and we are probably too over protective of her. So a holiday sounds very daunting especially considering the heat during this time of year... and the flight being over 4 hours.

She's going to be 1 year in August and we do need a break but is this a bit much considering the heat. She is a little behind in her developmental milestones because she was in hospital for so long and has spent a lot of time just recovering from the surgeries she's had.

Has anyone been to Rixos Sungate with a 1(ish) year old. Are they accommodating and will we be OK in the heat and on the plane journey ??

Thank you!

Personally I wouldn't take a 1yo on a foreign holiday. It just means that you do all the stuff you already do, but baby is grotty in the heat, you have the extra stress of trying to keep baby quiet (especially if a night waker still) around other guests, the hassle of taking everything with you. Its no holiday at all.

Age 3 was the earliest we went abroad which felt right. We still took a buggy but dd could walk when needed, they could move and splash in the pool when they got hot, they could eat food from the hotel, they could bring a couple of small toys but didn't need anything that took up lots of suitcase space, could go to kids clubs to give us an hours break etc. Still not the holidays we were used to, but still a break, and the kids appreciated it at that age.

At 12 months I'd consider something like center parcs for a treat. Log cabins far from other people in case of meltdowns at night, climate they are used to, warm pools, and if you take turns with a partner you can have a break doing something grown up like a physical challenge or the spa.

I don't think I would take any 1 year old to Turkey in August, in fact I wouldn't go to Turkey in August.

anythinginapinch · 29/06/2024 10:47

Too hot. I absolutely would not

We love travelling with our baby (11 months) and have been on sunny holidays abroad twice, but even we really wouldn't do Turkey in August with a little one. It's just too much stress trying to keep them cool and protected from the sun for too little reward!

If it feels a bit daunting to you then why not go somewhere cooler/nearer first time?

Have you been on any breaks with her?

When my DD was really little I'd go to Mallorca, Portugal etc and I'd stick to the slightly smaller hotels with high service levels. But I was a lone parent so perhaps my requirements were slightly different.

Turkey will be really hot in August, but have no experience of that hotel to share unfortunately.

I think you'll find it far too hot in Turkey. I loved travelling with my DC at that age but did sunshine holidays abroad earlier in the season and stuck to UK in August.

Edenmum2 · 29/06/2024 10:59

She's going to be 1 year in August and we do need a break

Then I would advise you not to take a baby to a fire cauldron

We've been to turkey several times end of July and yes it's been hot (as expected) but there were tons of babies there. The hotels we've stayed in (4/5 star) have lots of shelter and the baby / children pools are covered as are the bed areas. Lots of air con places. We've taken dc abroad from 3 months and would never not have considered it.

Turkey wouldn't be my first choice, it'll be hot. Very hot.

I’ve been taking my kids to Turkey since they were 6 months, usually for the whole of August (teens now). We go to the north so cooler, but still very hot, 36-40 most days, Antalya even hotter. We did a combo of pop up tent, umbrellas, spent a good deal of time in the sea and our beach has a restaurant with lots of shade (you basically take a table all day). But, crucially I think, we had the benefit of a family house by the beach, so washing machine, toys etc we could buy and leave there for every year. Not sure I would have gone so far if we were staying in a hotel.

Neverthless I think since you are worrying and asking then you probably should look closer to home or UK as pp have said and that will feed into how you feel
there.

Just got back from Turkey last night. Have a 1 year old (nearly 2) and a 4 year old.
Went a couple of years ago when we just had one child who was 2 then.

I'm not adverse to holidays with children but after this last 2 weeks we have agreed not to go back to Turkey again in JUNE - too hot. We were on the south coast. 37-38 most days. Too hot. The youngest didnt appreciate the pool as much as the older one. But even so it was basically a sweat box at breakfast and dinner with a bit of swimming and about 4 hours a day in the air con apartment.

Would never go in August, especially if you are unsure.

Lovely idea to holiday with friends but personally I'd choose somewhere cooler.

DinnaeFashYersel · 30/06/2024 08:16

We took our youngest to Turkey at 10 months old. She was 6 weeks premature

She did fine. A good sun parasol for the buggy. A full upv swimsuit, lots of fluids and lots of sunscreen.

We also took our eldest to menorca at 10 months old.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 30/06/2024 08:20

I wouldn't take a 1yr old to turkey. For once, it's a long flight, and two, ot will be so hot.

It's a no from me!
