Where to stay outside Paris city centre

We're having a couple of days in Paris on our way through on holiday this summer. We will be driving down from Calais then onwards to the north east so want to stay that side My DH and DS will also be driving out to Park Asterix on one of the days.

We're trying to find somewhere to stay just outside the city where we can park the car safely and get the metro in and out but don't really know where's safe and where to avoid. We won't be coming and going late at night.

Does anyone know what Aubervilliers is like, that's the kind of area/location which works geographically

What are your dates? From 26 July to 11 August it's the Olympics and anywhere within 100km of Paris during that time, or a few days either side, will be at ludicrous prices (think £400 for the equivalent of a Travelodge).

Apart from that, you probably want to look at the RER map rather the Metro per se, as the Metro barely gets outside the limits of Paris proper. In general the north-eastern suburbs are not the best security-wise.

The suburbs aren’t brilliantly served by public transport. I can’t think of anywhere like Epping at the end of the Central line. How about a town near Paris like Fontainebleau? About 45 minutes by train.

Also, do not even think of visiting during the games unless that’s what you are going for. I’m here at the moment and there are posters everywhere warning about travel disruption and they are shutting several major stations. My sister’s coming to London to escape!

We stayed in Versailles and got the train in which doesn’t take very long. Parking was fine and it meant we could explore Versailles as well.

Thank you- We're going between the Olympics and Paralympics (17-19 august)

Could you stay somewhere on the RER line (A) that goes out to Disneyland? There are quite a few cheap chain hotels, some with pools, if you head out there. Parking won’t be a problem and you can get into Paris quite quickly.

A few years ago we drove over to France and stayed in Chantilly to the north of Paris, which was lovely. We got the train in to Paris each day. I think it took 30 to 40 mins.
