We're off soon for 4 days/3 nights - any tips, specifically for restaurants? (Less bothered about opera!)

TIA/

For classic/contemporary food try Oswald und Kalb near Stephansdom - https://www.oswaldundkalb.at

It's also fun to head to the outskirts of the city in the 19th district and go to one of the many Heuriger - bar/restaurants run by the many vineyards surrounding Vienna. More informal where you can try their wines & have traditional bar food or schnitzel.

For lunch the naschmarkt is fun - the big food market just outside of the ring road.

Thank you!

We're staying NE of the city, near Schottenring and Alsergrund, so not too far to walk to the Stephansdom quarter. (Although it looks like everywhere is pretty easy to walk to!)

If you like dressing up for dinner or want somewhere a bit fancy, then I definitely recommend Gerstner.

That sounds amazing! I had no idea that coffee houses were forbidden to women. Just as well I'm going with my husband, eh?!

The Vienna pass (not Vienna city card) is a really good deal. Sorry I don't like the food there no so help on that front.

I'm really intrigued by your comment about the food! (not being snippy, genuinely, just interested!) I have an Austrian friend who lives in Vienna and he s always sending me photos of amazing-looking food - buffets, pizzas, ramen, stirfries, burgers, icecream, donuts, wonderful cakes and pastries and so on.

Mind you he is vegan and they seem to have many fabulous restaurants catering for vegans/vegetarians, especially Asian ones.

Just heading to the airport to come home Sad

We've had a great time, and the food has been fantastic!

That’s great to hear! Please update us with what you ended up doing/seeing/eating.

DH and I are hoping to go in September so would be wonderful to hear how it all was (haven’t been for a few years)

First thing I can really recommend is the city airport train (CAT).

https://www.cityairporttrain.com

Goes direct from the airport to the city (slightly out of the city centre, to the south east) and only takes 16 minutes. We also found out that there are left luggage lockers at the station which are free to use, if you have a CAT ticket. That was really useful as we had to check out of our AirBnB at 10.00, but our flight home wasn't until 17.00.

At the station, (Wien Mitte, also known as Landstraße), when we arrived we picked up their little free city guide, and used that, along with our guide book, to find our way around. We followed their walking tour on one of our days, and that was really good.

Second thing is to buy a City Pass (here) which gives you access to the underground/trams/buses - and I think some museums, although we didn't use it for that.

Non-stop airport transfer to Vienna!

Stress-free airport transport ✔ direct train between Vienna airport – city center in 16 min ✔ Airport Express incl. baggage drop-off already in city center!

You've probably left it a bit late to get in, but Steiereck im Stadtpark is one of the best restaurants in the world.

We went for lunch (started at 1200, left at 1600) had menus signed by the chef. Even 6-8 years later still one of the best meals we have eaten.

We didn't plan our meals/restaurants - with the exception of one, Malka (a kosher restaurant) as there wasn't much around our AirBnB and we didn't want to go back into the city centre that evening. On our first day, when we arrived, we ate at Plachutta:

... as it was close to the station, and it was late and we were hungry - but actually it was really good. Traditional Austrian food.

Everywhere we ate was good, and very good value. And without exception, all the people we dealt with were helpful and very friendly.

We went to the Sigmund Freud museum, and had lunch beforehand here

I'm going to Vienna in August so will post this to bookmark to read properly later!

We were thinking about doing a hop on hop off bus tour. Is this worth it or is the transport system they have good enough?

BIWI · 05/07/2024 23:03

The tube system is pretty good - but there's a lot of construction work going on (I think a new line is being built) so there are some closures, which made things a bit difficult when we were trying to get back to the airport today! It's a simple system, in that there are only 5 lines.

We didn't use the trams or buses, as we mostly walked. I think (not sure) that the easypass ticket also covers the hop-on/hop-off bus - worth checking that out.
