I know Palma is a lovely city to visit. Is there anywhere else on the island that similar and not all night clubs and resort like holiday hotels? Looking for a good mix of chill and sightseeing. Thanks.

Palma itself is not full of nightclubs or family hotels whatsoever.

Justmemyselfandi999 · 24/06/2024 20:54

Puerto Pollensa is lovely

Puerto Pollensa is lovely

Agree with this, Soller as well.
Avoid Alcúdia / Playa del Muro.

Don’t let my secret out!! 🙈
Puerto Pollenca is gorgeous, one of my all time favourite resorts. It has gotten very busy + more expensive in recent years though as due to good reason it has skyrocketed in popularity

Puerto Pollensa is lovely. I do also like Puerto Alcudia. We are going there in September.

MyRamone · 24/06/2024 21:00

Deia is lovely, as is Santanyi

Yes, I’m looking to see if there are other areas on the island like Palma, ie not a resort full of hotels and all inclusives.

Soller is beautiful. You've got the old town and then you catch the wooden tram down to the port and beach area.

You’re not going to find anywhere else on a tiny island which is like the capital city. Palma isn’t a resort whatsoever

I’ve read my OP about 10 times now and I can’t see where I have written that Palma is a resort.

Majorca is about the size of Essex. There is one very big town (Palma, 400k people), a few other inland towns (5-50k people) where not much happens, and then about 15-20 large-ish seasonal holiday resorts.

None of the other inland towns have any tourism infrastructure to speak of, nor would you go there for a week's holiday without a car (or a plan to tour by bus, which is actually quite do-able). Yes, Manacor has the Rafa Nadal Experience, but that's just a fun half-day out for people who like tennis. Pollensa and Andratx are beautiful to walk around, but only for a day, unless you're a writer or something. In fact apart from Palma none of the towns take more than a day to explore.

The good news is that the seaside resorts come in various degrees of liveliness/niceness, from Magaluf (lots of stag/hen dos) and Arenal (lots of German stag/hen dos) through family resorts like Alcudia and Santa Ponsa (lots of AI places, no shortage of football shirts or full English), some more relaxed places with fewer Irish pubs (Puerto Soller, Puerto Pollensa) and on to some quite posh places (Port Andratx, Portals Nous — think Howards' Way, updated) and then some very quiet ones with not much to do after 10pm apart from finish your brandy and watch the evening twilight over the water (Portocolom, Sant Elm).

So your main options to "chill and sightsee", depending to some extent on the composition of the party and your budget, are either (a) a hotel in the countryside (there are some nice luxury places), with a car, and either a non-drinking driver or judicious use of taxis for those evenings where you don't want to eat in the hotel's restaurant; or (b) staying in one of the quieter seaside places and getting around by car or bus.

Or of course, stay in Palma. 😎

Soller town is lovely, Port De Soller is pretty, but getting very busy and more touristy. Valdemosa is pretty, for a day, as is Deia.

Invisimamma · 24/06/2024 21:42

We stayed on the edge of Paguera last year, some really beautiful quiet beaches nearby. It had supermarket and a few bars and restaurants but it wasn't a party town.

PrincessofWells · 24/06/2024 21:42

Have you looked at Porto Colom?

stalecrayon · 24/06/2024 21:47

Thank you for all the suggestions. Going to,speak to DH about these tomorrow.

Growing up my mum took me to Cala Bona a few times, lots of lovely restaurants by the dock and you can get boats to other parts of the island from here, and bus to the caves of drach in Porto Cristo which is lovely, we used to stay in a hotel here, walk out to a different restaurant each evening and do day trips to other parts of the island. As an adult I stayed in S’illot once too which was also nice but for me didn’t beat Cala Bona but that’s probably mostly because of the nostalgia.

Decided as a teenager that Cala Bona will be my first holiday I take my child on (and that I’m definitely bringing my mum with me), now 26 and TTC so I’m hopeful that I’ll be making that trip soon! 🤞

Cala Bona is also walking distance into one of the bigger resort areas (Cala Millor) but I believe that has more of a nightlife vibe (not 100% certain), although I do remember enjoying looking in all the shops (the entire seafront walk from Cala bona to Cala millor or lined with shops). For sightseeing 100% recommend Caves of drach in Porto cristo

Jumpinag on this thread. What are things to do in Majorca? I think you can get a boat ride to caves, go on walks ... what else?

Pritas · 25/06/2024 14:18

I've been to a few resorts in Mallorca.
Cala D'Or very pretty coves and lots of cobbled streets.
Calla Millor lovely beaches and lots of great places to eat and sit and people watch, busy but not a nightlife resort by any means.
Cala Bona which is attached to Cala Millor. Didn't like this. We went in May, it's a bit too full of English breakfasts and British bars. Neighbouring Cala Millor is much nicer and has more of an international feel.
C'an Picafort. Germans abroad.
My next trip will be somewhere nearer to Palma.
