anyone seen an iceberg?

I want to book my 'big' holiday of a lifetime. Probably the last of the challenging holidays due to though we are quite fit.
I want to see ice, and icebergs.
Has anyone been on a holiday and seen them?
We can be away for a max of 14 days. I have read endlessly about Alaska and Greenland, and although the holiday companies talk about ice and massive icebergs, when I look deeper there does not seem to be a guarantee that we will actually see them, or go to where they are. The usual brochures are all a bit vague.
I want to be somewhere where the bergs are not weather dependent, the whole idea of the holiday is to see them.
I know it will be expensive, but we are not in the 30k per person bracket!
Has anyone any actual experience of this, please?

Posted too soon. We also got to walk on glaciers and go to the edge of a glacier and were lucky enough to be present to hear the roar of sound as a small part of the glacier broke off and fell into the sea.

We did a 2 part holiday, first half in the Canadian rockies and second part cruising to Alaska. We saw bears and whales amongst other things and it was definitely a holiday of a lifetime.

annonymousse,
Very much so, you have saved me from wasting our money and not getting what we want, so many thanks

I did in Alaska. I was a student so no cruise ships for me. Took local ferries and camped on deck.

Indeed. I remember being stood literally in a glacier all around me. I'd met a guy travelling and we were distracted by the beauty of the blue ice. Turned our backs on our rucksacks for a minute and something ate our lunch. Probably a bear, we saw loads and we're slightly terrified camping.

Ilulissat in Greenland.
I had read about Ilulissat, and it did look hopeful, and nearer!

Ratisshortforratthew - where abouts, please?

Please would you tell me which companies you went with?

I stayed in Nuuk, not through a company just booked flights and accommodation myself

Bit further down the river, but in Quebec in winter

Impressive to see

Again many thanks everyone.
I am also looking at Canada and Newfoundland, I would want a package, but not finding a lot.

Yes, sail the inside passage from Seattle/vancouver to Alaska and book the glacier trip. Or fly to Juneau and do it independently

memecorinne · 25/06/2024 07:43

I live in Alaska. Plenty of glaciers but not icebergs. Sometimes a chunk of ice will break off a glacier but not guaranteed and not that exciting. Don't bother with Alaska if you need an iceberg. If you want glaciers and scenery and beauty yes! But if icebergs are a deal breaker for you don't come here!

mitogoshi · 25/06/2024 07:43

I actually took the state ferry to alaska! My parents did the cruise and saw a glacier calve to become an iceberg.

Budget is everything, you can do the Alaska trip reasonably because there's competition, Antarctica is better but very very expensive

gardenmusic · 25/06/2024 07:45

memecorinne Many thanks. The iceberg is the deal breaker.

I do fancy Antarctica, but I think I am pushing DH far enough without the long flight.

Try Hurtigruten cruises? You really don’t need a package though. Just book your flights and hotel and day trips with local providers like you would anywhere else!

Iceberg alley in Newfoundland! Best time late May/early June. Some advice here https://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/things-to-do/iceberg-viewing.

mouse70 · 25/06/2024 10:58

Antarctica combined with Falklands. Many many Icebergs and penguins!!!!Wonderful cruise.

gardenmusic · 25/06/2024 11:03

Ratisshortforratthew, and other brave souls,
I am a bit scared of booking flights and holiday individually, because I lose the protection of the package.
If my flight were cancelled or late, I would be chasing my holiday, where if they were booked under one umbrella, the company would be chasing my holiday.

Sue152,
I have heard of Jokulsarlon, but I was under the impression there were just little chunks, rather than bergs?
Fully intend to get there next trip to Iceland.

Maybe, absolutely gorgeous though and you get very close, couple of pics I took.

Thanks Sue,
I thought I was alone in my iceberg craving...

When you went to Iceland did you go to Jokulsarlon? Usually icebergs are found there. There is also iceberg alley in Newfoundland, around Twilingate, icebergs peak late May through mid June. I have not been. Not sure how reliable they are outside of that season.

gardenmusic · 25/06/2024 17:29

TeamGeriatric, No when I went to Iceland it was the usual touristy things, but we didn't get to Jokulsarlon. Next Icelandic trip we will.
I am hoping to get away soon, but think I have missed the Newfoundland window.
More of less decided upon Ilulissat aiming at July or Aug this year.
