Light weight packing suggestions

We have booked a holiday of a lifetime.. safari in Africa but limited to 15kg luggage each. Going for 10 days including a beach hotel resort. Would really appreciate any suggestions of light weight packing alternatives for example shampoo flakes.. anything really to keep to 15kg. Thank you

I recommend a sports bra for Kenyan safari, very bumpy!

I have done the safari/beach combo before ** but with no weight restrictions. I've just ordered some very dull coloured clothing for the six night safari element. I hate it all! I remember last time there was a fabulous 70 yo woman who cared nothing for "natural" colours and dressed up to the nines every day. She managed not to get eaten by a lion.

** Last time I only had one old plain black swimsuit (I don't know why) which I discovered to my horror on day one had started to perish and the hotel shop had nothing suitable. So the rest of my luggage allowance this time will mostly be swimsuits 😂

Whenever I went backpacking I always took Lush shampoo bars - they do a lovely yellow one. You can cut it in a third or quarter for your trip. Buy travel size bottles / pots, including a mini perfume diffuser.

I also recommend merino cardigans (buy from Uniqlo) as they wash really well, aren't bulky, don't retain smells, look smart and are good in hot and cold weather. You can wear under a fleece if it gets really cold at night. Get it in a classic / neutral colour so it goes with everything. A linen shirt might be good for the safari and on the beach holiday.

I always take more clothes than are needed for a beach holiday so definitely pack light for that part - 2 X swimwear, 1 sarong or kaftan, 3 dresses that work for evening and 3 that work for daytime/the beach.

Personally I think 15kg is plenty! I take about that for a week on a beach holiday and that's with plenty of unnecessary things.

I came back to this thread for several reasons:

  1. Managed to keep main bag to 15kg, even though it turned out we had a 20kg limit (+ hand luggage) after all that! Was actually quite easy.
  1. I bought two "skorts" which were brilliant and I would recommend.
  1. Most importantly to thank @Wilma55 for her sports bra tip! I dug mine (heavy duty) out of my bra drawer and it was an absolute godsend!

Hope you had/have a great time OP 😊
