Hello,

I’m flying to Rhodes on Sunday with my two children who are both a little fussy with food. Does anyone know if I can take a pack lunch through Birmingham airport security for them to eat on the plane?

I’m thinking pack lunch for 1 kid - sandwich (cheese), babybel, crisps, cucumber and carrot sticks and a biscuit.

pack lunch for my other child - vegetable rice, cucumber and carrot sticks, crisps and biscuits

thanks so much for your help!

All sounds fine. Nothing that could be seen as a liquid.

Yes you can

PeonySeasons · 19/06/2024 12:17

Yes, I've done it for us

AuditAngel · 19/06/2024 12:21

We do, although more sandwiches and crisps. Just avoid yogurt/liquids

Mumsntfan1 · 19/06/2024 12:23

Yes, it's fine. No dips or any form of liquid or paste but solid food is ok. Technically you can't take meat/dairy into the EU but it's unlikly to be checked and definatly ok if you eat it on the plane.

Sandwiches, dry food is fine. They're just funny on liquids, which includes soup, jars of mayo etc.
It's a good idea to bring food for the plane, I always do.

Yes it’s fine. We do a packed lunch, or part of, quite often. As people have mentioned, you’ll need to empty water bottles and not take large liquids through. Yoghurts are fine if you put them in your ‘liquids’ bag (under 100ml). You can buy bits after security too if you want.

FattypuffToThinnifer · 19/06/2024 13:10

If you do take yoghurts or sachets of sauce etc through security make sure it says on the packaging how big they are; I got one confiscated once!

Caspianberg · 19/06/2024 13:17

Yes you can take all food as picnic really. Just not liquids

You can take liquids under 100ml clear bag - ie kids smoothies.

You can also take their empty reusable water bottles. Then refill at water machines after security for on plane and in airport

I wouldn’t take rice though. Rice food poisoning having cold rice at hot room temperatures for hours on end

goingdownfighting · 19/06/2024 13:18

I take small drinks too as part of their liquids allowance. As long as it's below 100ml. Ditto fromage frais etc.

YouveGotAFastCar · 19/06/2024 13:33

Don't put liquids in a liquids bag for Birmingham, and there's no restriction on how many 100mls you can have, but you can't have anything more than that.

You'll be fine taking the food. Strictly speaking you should throw it away on the plane if it's not eaten, as it's illegal to import dairy into most of the EU.

Rice doesn't seem the best choice, though... it'll go through a lot of different temperatures which seems quite risky!

The OP's packed lunches sound fine. We often took packed lunches for our fussy youngster.

Funnily, though, we were once stopped and bag searched. Turned out the small pork pie we'd included had flagged up presumably due to the jelly content appearing as liquid!

We soon learned, the next time we went, we took out the pork pie and put it in the tray along with electricals and liquids and it went through fine!

Only if you call it a packed lunch, otherwise the grammar police will arrest you 😉
