Anyone been to/going to Majorca? Bit worried

We are going to Majorca for 2 weeks this summer, villa in the north (near Pollenca).
I am sure it will be fine but you know how it is, you look forward to a holiday all year, it’s costs a bomb and now I’m feeling a bit worried about it being affected by the protests.
Is it all a bit of a storm in a teacup? How is the attitude and vibe towards tourists in restaurants etc?
Thanks

It's the mozzies you want to worry about. Fucking eaten alive in Majorca every single time.

itstimeforme · 18/06/2024 10:41

I'm just back from Cala D'Or, didn't notice anything at all, waiters and hotel staff all lovely and friendly. But yes, never had so many mosquito bites!!

Whatmonth · 18/06/2024 10:44

Grandson and his mates are there now.
They are having a whale of a time.
Not seen any protests, everyone friendly.
In magaluf it's busy but not a crowded as last year.

williteverstopraining2024 · 18/06/2024 20:25

Oh god is it bad for mozzys?? I am looking to go this year!
I'm sure the protests will die down OP especially when it's the main bit of the season for them!

Hotgirlwinter · 18/06/2024 20:27

It’s the wind that kills Majorca for me, that said I’ve had two lovely holidays there!

MajesticWhine · 18/06/2024 20:28

We are going in a few weeks. Also near Pollenca. I am confident it will be ok. Most of the protests have been near Palma. So as long as we get out of the airport, it will be ok.

We visit that part of Mallorca a few times a year. It's not famous for friendly service or a particularly warm attitude towards tourists (maybe just the Brits?) but I can't say that this year has felt any different so far to last year or the year before. With a few exceptions, they've been as frosty as usual but certainly nothing to worry about.

The whole protests thing is a huge nothingburger, whipped up by the UK tabloids for clicks.

A total of 0.03% of the population of Majorca has taken part in a total of two light-hearted early-morning protests on the beaches, aimed not at tourists but at a local idiotic far-right politician (think "30p Lee") who said "Well, frankly, Majorcans need to understand that they can't go to the beach in summer". So they said, fuck you, we're going to the beach. Bella Ciao may have been sung. Maybe a couple of the people shouted "tourists go home", perhaps at the instigation of a desperate reporter. The latest protest was on a beach that is totally full by 9am anyway (Calo des Moro, the most Instagrammed beach on Majorca: queues of up to 2 hours just to get a place on the rocks in high season).

There have also been a couple of peaceful, well-organised demos in Palma city, again aimed not at tourists but at the local government, asking for more affordable housing. It's true that there is an overtourism angle there (the housing shortage is greatly exacerbated by Airbnbs, both legal and illegal), but there are zero protests against tourists themselves, except in the minds of "content providers" at the Independent, Mail, Telegraph, and (worst of all) Retch plc, home of the Mirror/Star/Express and the "Arsewipe Live" feeds.

Interestingly, any actual violence tends to come pretty much exclusively from other tourists. Drunk lads getting into fights over football colours, German far-right yobs beating up doormen, builders from St Albans having brawls with waiters (this was a couple of weeks ago), and in one especially charming case last year, a Dutch tourist shitting on the head of someone who had passed out, and filming it. But if you avoid Magaluf and Arenal after 11pm you'll be absolutely fine.

MaggieFS · 19/06/2024 00:39

It's fine, it's absolutely fine. The very, very small protests are being held, in the main from what I can work out, at places which tourists never used to go near, but which are now hugely instagrammable for max. exposure.

I was there recently and everyone who works in a big resort in hospitality knows they need the tourists. That doesn't mean there isn't work for the government to do on accessible housing where they've been restricting building, but tourists are very much welcome.

Think of it like visiting London on the day of a March in parliament square. You might not go to Parliament Square on that specific day, but you'd still visit London and just go there a different day.

Stayed near Sa Coma beach two weeks ago. No sign of protests. Locals all friendly.

Thanks everyone, super reassuring

Storm in a teacup and exaggerated. I’m near Pollenca right now.

Tiny protest (200 people can fit on a couple of buses) on some tiny beach out of tourist area, that takes a fair bit of effort to get to, because tourists are leaving their rubbish behind. Wouldn't have known about it if not for the Daily Fail.

Protest in Palma recently about residents priced out of the property market. My cousin is mallorquin and lives in Palma, he didn’t know it was happening.

The bars and restaurants up here are noticeably quiet for the time of year. There’s been an issue with getting beach facilities, so currently no toilets, sunbeds, bars, showers or disabled access so people are staying around the pool, and not venturing out to places near the beach. Any spending has been welcomed by these venues!

Honestly, pay no attention to it. Enjoy your holiday.

There was a cock-up by Pollensa town council in issuing the tender. They tried to double the fee that the successful franchisee was expected to pay, and got no bids. Squeaky bum time now as they try to get it done again in a tearing hurry before the peak of the season!

Then over at Alcudia they decided to renew the beach bars, but instead of starting last November they ummed and ahhed and then demolished them all in March. Work is now going on behind screens all along the beach.

Everywhere else on the island the beach services are working fine, luckily!

I was in Calla Millor a couple of weeks ago. No sign of any issues.
