Best travel sickness pills / remedies??

We're doing a 24hr ferry this year and I need to get stocked up!! We don't particularly suffer normally but this isn't a few hours in the car so I'm interested to know what are the pros / cons of different things and when best to take / use them. Thanks!

Never tried this, but a friend of mine who sails a lot swears by wearing an ear bud in just one ear (I guess an ear plug would work too).

Plump82 · 18/06/2024 14:50

Stugeron. I get the non branded version online which is much cheaper. Kwells, joyrides etc knock me out and give me a very hoarse voice. With Stugeron you MUST take them 2 hours before travel. I usually take them about 3 hours as even 5 mins less than then 2 and I'm very ill. I get terrible travel sickness on any mode of transport apart from trains and have these on me at all times.

Comedycook · 18/06/2024 14:51

Watching with interest...I get so travel sick!

VeronicaBeccabunga · 18/06/2024 14:57

Stugeron is a strong antihistamine and seems to work by knocking you out so you don't know what's going on. Which I'm all in favour of.....
I have crossed the English Channel under sail, tied into a bunk, under the influence of this stuff and remember almost nothing 😁

In the US you can buy Dramamine, which is very good stuff but you can't get it here. It also make you go to sleep. We gave my son one on the ground at JFK, he was asleep before take-off and had to be shaken awake at Heathrow.

Both of these make you very drowsy and a 'out of it' so you wouldn't be fit to drive after taking them.

I wish you a good trip on calm seas - I can be seasick on a boating lake.

mrssquidink · 18/06/2024 14:59

I get seasick and Stugeron is what works for me. This includes a very rough crossing back from Spain across the Bay of Biscay where a lot of people were unwell. As Plump82 says you need to take 2 hours before travel and then retake at the specified intervals.

FusionChefGeoff · 19/06/2024 22:22

Forgot to mention we've got DS(11) and DD(9) what can they take?! This all sounds pretty heavy and not sure it's kids friendly??

Stugeron is definitely kid friendly, I've taken them my whole life. They 100% don't knock me out. I'm absolutely fine taking them with no side effects. I use them to get into work if I need to go by bus and can function absolutely normally.

HermioneWeasley · 20/06/2024 07:18

Kwells. They’re non drowsy too

Haveanaiceday · 20/06/2024 07:30

I get car sick/seasick, but was ok on the ferry in reasonably calm weather.

VillageLifeIsTricky · 20/06/2024 07:34

I have a prescription antihistamine called Cinnarazine which today I learned is Stugeron OTC. I'd taken some for a different issue and inadvertently had zero air/ travel sickness for the first time in my life, so they definitely work.

PickledPurplePickle · 20/06/2024 08:33

Stugeron works for me

Upallnight2 · 20/06/2024 08:56

Sturgeon knocks me out! I managed to buy bonine online (americans seem to say it's good and not knock you out like dramamine) but haven't tried it yet

Nitgel · 20/06/2024 08:59

I got bad travel sickness on a boat ride around the greek islands and the local chemist sold me Emecalm Becalm Emecalm Syrup for Nausea 120 ml - Vita4you

it worked very quickly and I bought a bottle home. Not sure if you can get in the UK for some reason. It worked very fast.

Never looked back since we discovered Stugeron. It's brilliant.

Goddessonahighway · 20/06/2024 09:15

Another vote for sturgeon. Didn't make me drowsy.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 20/06/2024 09:18

Sturgeron definitely. Never been drowsy with them. I’m a responder and if I’m in the car with another responder doing 80 I get very car sick. These work brilliant and not had an episode since using them.

SoupDragon · 20/06/2024 09:24

I use Kwells as you can take them half an hour before travelling. Stugaron (which my mum always swore by) is 2 hours. Either would be good, depending on whether either makes you drowsy or not

PrincessMee · 20/06/2024 09:30

Boots own

skinnyoptionsonly · 20/06/2024 09:34

You need to find out what works best for you.
For me stugeron does nothing except cause drowsiness. The drug in kwells - hyoscine is what works for me. It does give a dry mouth though but better than puking !

You can also get them in patches for behind the ear for longer periods of time. Those are prescription though

MinnieMountain · 20/06/2024 19:27

Phenergan, prescription only, is the only thing that works for DS. They also do a liquid for younger children.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 21/06/2024 17:29

Dramamine is great, it doesn't make me tired at all. I think it's approved for 12 and up.

bruffin · 21/06/2024 17:30

sturgeon works for me, but also crystalized ginger

solsticelove · 21/06/2024 17:38

We go the natural route and use sickness acupressure wrist bands (Amazon or boots sell them and you can get kids and adults sizes) plus ginger capsules (Sea Band Nausea Relief).

We use these every time we do the long ferry trips. Always been lucky with calm crossings though so not sure how they’d work for a very choppy trip…

jaydeem · 21/06/2024 17:41

I bought my daughter the nausea bands to wear on a camper van trip in Europe. She gets bad motion sickness which leads to migraines so she wasn't looking forward to the trip being 14 weeks pregnant and didn't feel she could take her usual medication. Worked a treat, says she had no nausea for the full trip
