Copenhagen ice skating

Ok so I realise this is very niche and will be staggered if I get any replies but I'm taking DD to Copenhagen over the summer and she is keen to take her ice skates.

Does anyone know whether there are public sessions at the ice hockey rink in Copenhagen? Any other places to skate within reach of the city?

The ice hockey rink in the Ørestad area of Copenhagen (about half-way between the centre and the airport) has public skating sessions, but it is closed in July when the Danes are all on holiday. There is a skating disco on Saturdays at 19.00 in the even-numbered weeks (Europe works on week numbers rather than dates) - if interested you can phone and ask when these start again in August on 3074 9690

The sessions are run by Copenhagen Falcons - details on their website >

There's also a rink at Østerbro Skøjtehal, one at Frihedens Idrætscenter in Hvidovre and one at Rødovre Skøjte Arena. The Copenhagen Tourist Office will have more details regarding summer opening times, although skating is really an autumn and winter activity in Denmark.

Visit in December and there are several open-air rinks in the centre of Copenhagen - e.g. at Tivoli and at the Town Hall square.

Thank you so much for replying! DD will be a bit gutted that I have booked the one month that the rink is closed. But at least she won't take her skates and find out when we get there.

The disco sounds fab.... will look into that, see if that date works.

Be aware that Ice skates are almost certainly not allowed in hand luggage. I’d really say No to this idea. There’s plenty to see and do in Copenhagen. Including a trip to Tivoli Gardens for dc.

msmatcha · 20/06/2024 14:53

Oh my word Tizer!! That had literally not crossed my mind I'm embarrassed to say!!

Will dissuade DD and focus on other fun things. Like a train to Sweden and Tivoli and a kayak tour.

I think that rental skates are available at all of the rinks.

If you're also into roller skating, there is Friday Night skating around Copenhagen on some Friday evenings in the summer, including 19th July.

@msmatcha Skates are checked luggage only so I would say to DD it’s not possible.

The boat trips in Copenhagen are lovely. Malmo on the train is possible or Lund, but the journey isn’t that exciting! We liked seeing the Royal Stables and the Palace has an amazing tapestry.

Be a bit ? about the Meatpacking area. It has a drugs centre. It’s fairly obvious. With a DC I’d avoid that area.

Thanks for all the tips. I'm a first timer. Is the science museum worth a visit? And should I book the restaurant in Tivoli or can we just show up?

The Experimentarium science museum is a must-see - it is excellent.

There are numerous cafes, fast-food places and restaurants in Tivoli. It's a few years since I was last there, so I don't know which ones are currently good and which to avoid. I would expect that the good ones need to be booked.

msmatcha · 25/06/2024 17:26

Thank you. Will research and try to book Tivoli and Experimentarium tomorrow. Still haven't quite worked out how to get from Billund to Copenhagen. I think maybe a taxi to a nearby town (Vieja..?) then train. Hope this is practical with four of us and four suitcases... again all tips welcome! Should we just hire a car? Should I have planned this sooner? Probably.

Billund to Copenhagen is easy by public transport.

Bus 43 from Billund to Vejle, then train to Copenhagen. See www.rejseplanen.dk for all train and bus times in Denmark.

In the summer there can be traffic delays between Billund and Vejle, so Rejseplanen helpfully explains that you should allow extra time for the change at Vejle without actually giving the earlier bus times - which you can find at the Sydtrafik website > 43 (sydtrafik.dk) Buses run approx. every 30 minutes and the journey takes 30 minutes.

The change at Vejle is no problem - the bus station (Vejle Trafikcenter) is next to the railway station.

Don't bother with a car in Copenhagen - it is more hassle than it is worth and everything is easily reached by Metro or S-tog train, or on foot or bicycle. Copenhagen is really compact and easy to get around. Even days out to Roskilde (for Viking ships), Helsingør (Elsinore) or across the bridge to Malmö or Lund can be done by public transport.

Thank you so much, this is so helpful and exactly what we are doing today! Bus 43 here we come! I'm planning on just booking the train when we get to the train station as the trains are so regular.
