Can a group party share the luggage allowance?

There are 4 of us but I only have one very large suit case and 2 smaller ones. We are flying with TUI so have 20 kg per person. DH and I are likely to share a suitcase and then two separate ones for the teens. Obviously the larger one is likely to exceed the 20kg weight if me and DH is sharing is that ok?

Yes you can pool the weight. We have did jt often. Check the maximum with your airline.

edited to add your large suitcase cannot weight more then 25kg when pooling

Brendabigbaps · 15/06/2024 14:35

If you’re all booked on the same booking you can “share” the allowance,
the maximum a case can be is 25kg though I think. Maybe a bit more but you certainly can’t put 40kg in one case

saveforthat · 15/06/2024 14:35

It depends on thè airline. Usually you can't.

ThePoshUns · 15/06/2024 14:38

No I thought this when I flew with American Airlines. Family of 4, took 2 large suitcases thinking we could pool our allowance. Had to unpack as we were over at check in desk and put stuff in our hand luggage. Luckily not overly so.

Ah bugger 😭

2 x 20kg of luggage is an awful lot of stuff!
Why not pack better and aim for 10kg each then you are safe.
Or contact the airline and find out if you can do 1 case of 25kg.

Well easy jet let you share the allowance, that was on our trip in April, im not sure about other airlines

IcouldbutIdontwantto · 15/06/2024 15:14

We've just flown with TUI (literally landed back in the uk about 3 hours ago) and you can pool the weight - think there is a max per suitcase but can't remember what it was.

dementedpixie · 15/06/2024 15:16

@Totallybannanas it depends on the airline. There is a limit on how heavy an individual case can be though

Although having reread - we booked two 20kg suitcases and could pool between them, I'm not sure if we'd only taken one if we'd have been able to go above the 20kg, though if your teens pack less it might be ok.

Hah - exactly the same with American Airlines! DH and I were those people frantically redistributing my sponge bag contents between our suitcases at check in!

Totallybannanas · 15/06/2024 16:14

It's doesn't matter how big/size of suit case though does it unless hand luggage?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 15/06/2024 16:23

Tui doesn't seem to have a size restriction on checked in baggage but has a weight limit on a single item

Totallybannanas · 16/06/2024 10:36

Thank you!

There is some measurement I remember seeing. It was based on the circumference of the bag if I remember correctly.

There are measurements because anything over a certain size is classed as oversized luggage (usually ski bags, golf clubs, snowboard bags etc) but if it's just a very large suitcase I expect you'd be fine.

NorthernGirlie · 16/06/2024 10:50

Ask around to see if you can borrow a suitcase?

Put the heavy stuff in the small cases?

Some poor bugger has to lift your case in the hold so can't be heavier!

Pritas · 16/06/2024 11:08

We always did this as a family of four. Cross packing is a good idea anyway. Recently I've used his and hers coloured packing cubes which makes it easier when unpacking at the hotel.
I don't travel light but even packing loads of stuff I'm usually a bit under 20kg

TwigTheWonderKid · 16/06/2024 11:26

We pool our luggage but I tend to spread everyone's clothes through the 4 suitcases (in case one goes missing) and I always put the lighter things in the larger cases and heavier stuff in the smaller ones to avoid the big ones being over weight.

FoodieToo · 16/06/2024 15:03

Aer Lingus don't allow pooling luggage !
