Would you go on solo trip with dd14 to Sharm

I went to Egypt in 2003, travelled all over with a small group but still got quite a bit of hassle as a blonde 20 something.

dd14 wants to do her open water scuba abd I'm looking for decent novice resorts where I can join her on a couple of her dives in October (im AOW but a bit rusty).I'm currently looking at Malta, Crete, Corsica but was discounting Egypt without DH. Can I ask if anyone has experience of travelling over there as two females (one fat and old lol) alone. We would be staying in an AI so I don't have to worry about spending too much abd can enjoy our time off in the resort as the purpose of the trip is diving and relaxing. So wouldn't really be doing too much wandering in sharm anyway. Facilities and reviews are fantastic at several hotels abd there are so many 5* dive shops.

Ive seen similar posts and the majority of people will say you’ll be fine. Ime though you will be constantly pestered non stop, even by the hotel staff. I wouldn’t let your dd out of your sight if you did go.

My mom and I visited in 2015 (I was 21, Mom was 46) and would never go back.

Hotel was absolutely fine (all inclusive), staff very lovely as you'd expect but as soon as you stepped out of the hotel, we got bored and wanted to look around the shops, we were bombarded by men, we felt incredibly uncomfortable. Doesn't help I am blonde so like red rag to a bull but I've never felt that uncomfortable in my life.

Thanks, that itself is very offputting. Dd is a very young minded teen and more interested in her flute, her horse and sewing. She hasn't even kissed her boyfriend (eww mum REVOLTING) so she would not enjoy being hassled

Have you considered Dahab? I haven’t travelled there solo, as was with husband, but it has a very laid back, relaxed feel and is renowned for its diving

Sharm is pretty much purpose built as a diving resort. There is very very very little to do outside the AI hotels.

To the point of it's really not worth leaving the hotel.

You won't get any major hassle in the hotel although your daughter might get some looks.

We went with our two teenage daughters, if you choose your AI hotel you may be ok. Our daughters were hassled all the time especially in the markets and on sightseeing.

I'd say Malta. Much more to do when not diving. Go to Maltaqua in St Paul's Bay, they are great and do a full turn key package with accommodation. Walking distance from lads of restaurants, and a short bus ride from Valletta.

We went to Taba years ago, down the coast from Sharm. Much smaller and more chill. No idea what it's like now.

I went to Sharm this year, I’d say you’d be fine, I went with my 20 yr old son.

Pontipinecity · 07/06/2024 05:44

If you’re main purpose is the diving and some relaxing and eating etc then I really can’t see the problem as you’ll just be within your AI hotel. We’ve been to Egypt several times and not experienced any issues. Went a couple of years ago when our DD was same age as yours and it was totally fine.

visiting Egypt with a 20yo son is very different from visiting with a 14yo daughter.

But I agree that if you go just for diving and stay in AI, you'll probably be just fine.

Validus · 07/06/2024 08:34

Yes but I’d stay in the hotel or wear a headscarf/long sleeves and legs while out.

Of course, but I’m still a woman so saw and felt the reactions and saw how others were treated.

If OP was asking about Egypt in general or Cairo for instance I’d say no way, especially not without a guide as I was harassed and stared at a lot in Cairo, but Sharm and the tourist areas in Sharm such as Soho Square are absolutely fine.

We hung out with other families with young daughters there, no one had any problems.

Something I found fascinating - no one can work in Sharm without producing a certificate every 6 months to show they have no criminal convictions! Apparently you can’t even access the area via road / sea / plane as a non tourist without this?! (Not sure how true this is, was told by one of the staff there)
