Hello Everyone, I want to plan my Holiday in USA with my family, I have Seattle in mind. what do you think should I visit Seattle or is there any other city better than seattle?
I also checked some tour guides for Seattle too, Can you please mention some Guides for that city (you'll mention instead of Seattle) like this SEATTLE TOUR GUIDE So that It would be easy for me to plan my trip in advance (bcz I have limited time).

What are you wanting to see/experience? What time of year are you going?

Trundledagain · 05/06/2024 19:05

How much time have you got? Seattle is nice maybe for a couple of days unless you plan to go hiking. You could take the train to Vancouver perhaps which is more interesting.

maw1681 · 05/06/2024 19:21

San Francisco is lovely. You could also do a road trip from SF to Seattle (or opposite way), a friend did this and had an amazing time

TerfTalking · 05/06/2024 19:22

We loved Boston.

Heirian · 05/06/2024 19:23

Ha I was going to say Seattle too, and take a trip to Vancouver.

I'm more into hiking and history, do you think San francisco would be best for that?

I'm doing Seattle for a few days, then picking up a cruise of Alaska.

I looked at San Fran, but the reports im hearing just made me say no (huge homeless and drug problem, not very safe at the moment)

I went last year as part of a wider road trip, only stayed 2 nights in SF. People online tried to make out others are exaggerating and it’s no different from any other city etc etc. but there is just a lot of seriously ill people wandering around shouting. I visited a lot of major cities around the world and never felt quite so uncomfortable in certain areas as I did there!

I actually want to Go for Hiking and museums, I am planning to visit museum of pop culture too.
I have almost 7 days, and that's I think a limited time to explore a city fully, thats why I want to go prepared.

Will you hire a car? It's not too far to Mount Hood which is lovely in the summer and they also have a hotel there which was used for the outside filming of The Shining.
In Seattle the museum of music is amazing and the underground city tour is a must.

If you want natural beauty then look at Utah! SO many parks, mountains, hikes etc. There are some great museums too. It would be hot but it's a dry desert heat and everywhere has air conditioning. Washington is pretty but the northwest cities have a lot of issues with homelessness right now. An east coast drive through North Carolina/DC could be fun too!

We visited Seattle last September. I was shocked just how many people were living in the streets and it was the first time in my life that I'd seen people openly taking drugs in front of tourist attractions. I really didn't like the city at all,it was grim, there were very few shops in the centre,we even struggled to buy an ice cream. We had planned to stop two days, then head on to Oregon,Idaho,Montana,Wyoming and the National parks, and if we liked Seattle, stop off again on the way home. None of us wanted to visit it again after what we'd seen,so we stopped in Spokane, which was lovely, and drove to the airport from there instead.
I'm not unused to big US cities,I've spent a fair amount of time in LA,NY,Chicago,San Francisco,Las Vegas, Phoenix, and other major cities,as had DH,but we'd both never seen anything like the situation in Seattle before. In future, I'd fly in and out from there, but not head into the city if I could possibly help it.

Roryhon · 11/06/2024 21:05

Seattle has a lot of drunk/drugged up homeless people too. Just like San Francisco it’s a good base for getting out and into the countryside. I always preferred Seattle to Vancouver as it’s a bit smaller and quieter.

frost8bite · 11/06/2024 21:12

Denver, Colorado? A dream for outdoorsy stuff

whatsagoodusername · 11/06/2024 21:13

I grew up in Seattle - it's got lots of good hiking in the surrounding areas (you will absolutely need to hire a car). Mount Rainier is impressive.

Homelessness issues have escalated a lot in the last 5-10 years. It's generally pretty safe, though, just less salubrious.

You could do Seattle quite easily, then up to Vancouver or Vancouver Island. Amtrak does a train daily if you don't want to drive through the border (can be slow) or a ferry direct to Victoria.

mitogoshi · 11/06/2024 21:27

Seattle is great - I recommend the museum of flight, go for a hike around discovery park (take one of the rental bikes there) take a boat whale watching or if budget allows fly up to Friday harbour on the float plane. A night down at mount ranier lodge (paradise lodge ideally) is a great spot to stay and hike. If you have time you could drive very the ferry to the Olympic peninsula then take the ferry to Victoria BC, stay there a night then ferry to Vancouver, then back to Seattle. (I usually fly in and out of Vancouver and rent a car in fact as it's cheaper than Seattle typically)

snoopyfanaccountant · 11/06/2024 21:50

DH and I visited LA, San Francisco and Las Vegas as well as smaller towns and various National Parks in April. San Francisco has a reputation for being unsafe/full of homeless but our experience was that it wasn't too bad and Vegas was far worse for homeless and people with obvious mental health problems.
If you are willing to drive, would combine San Francisco with Yosemite (depending on the time of year you might need to book your days in Yosemite).

Fairygoblin · 11/06/2024 22:12

Big no to San Francisco from me. Didn't feel safe, intimidating vibe. The coast south of there (17 Mile Drive) and the smaller towns were wonderful though

Have to be honest, I don’t know. We did all the city and went across on the ferry to Provincetown.

According to Google, Cape Cod apparently has hiking, so I would say yes at a guess: https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/best-hikes-on-cape-cod

in fact, the link above has a trail in Provincetown, so you could spend a whole day there, it’s a lovely place.
