Holidaying abroad

Just had a worrying event taking grandchildren on holiday with my son their father. Unfortunately the dad lost the childrens passports between getting on the plain to tenerife and getting off. How we dont know but obviously because we are no longer in the european market the children were refused entry and they were all sent home. The dad had his passport but goodness knows how the kids went missing.
The spanish border control were not having any of it we had pictures of the passports Then they realised that the childrens surname was different to the dads. Despite getting copies of their birth certificates sent over from the mum to border control and He had a letter of consent from her to take the children out of the country they wouldnt accept the letter because it had not been notorised which we thought you didnt need. So word of caution be careful with letters if you have one.
I have to say we went to majorca last year and they didnt even ask for a letter.

I had to read this twice, "the kids went missing" you meant the kids' passports went missing, not the kids themselves!

Anyway sorry to hear this and glad you all got home ok in the end. This is partly why I'm glad we double barrelled our kids' surnames

I suspect they would have been less concerned about the letter if he still had their passports.

The biggest issue is the missing passports not the letter. I think the authorities were right as how would he have flown home after the holiday?

Surely it's the lost passports that are the issue, not Brexit or DC having different surnames?

If you don't meet the entry requirements for Spain, ie a valid passport, they won't let you in. And even if they did, they wouldn't let you out again because you couldn't get back into the UK. Or you'd have to spend half your holiday dealing with Consulate visits to get replacement passports.

So the 'word of caution' here would be to keep checking that you have your passports and put them away safely after every time you take them out.
