Favourite type of holiday

My partner and I are on different ends of holiday wants. I crave sun, warmth, a beach, no cooking. He wants culture and isn't bothered by weather.
I feel like I've done enough city/culture breaks and as I'm getting older all I want is a break from housework and some lovely weather. As such we are taking separate holidays this year.

I'm interested in what the Mumsnet preference is, if there is one, and what the arguments are for your preferred holiday type. So what do you prefer? Beach, city, skiing, hiking, camping, all inclusive...? Also what's your idea of holiday hell? For me it's camping or skiing.

I get bored on your type of holiday - did enough of them when I was younger.
I can laze around & do nothing at home.

DH & I both like culture, city breaks, tours of countries - often long-haul destinations.

Hell would be camping ! We're looking at a safari holiday in Kenya, & you can "upgrade" to a tent from a proper lodge !!!

I like different holidays. I love a hot beach and swimming in the sea. I also like a city break and a cruise too.

Icequeen01 · 30/05/2024 18:21

We try to incorporate a little of both. I love the sun and sea but DH likes to be "doing" things. We always hire a car on our holidays so we usually have a day on the beach and then we go and visit a city/historic site the next day. Occasionally DH has gone off for an afternoon on his own. It works for us.

Oh and my holiday hell is camping or cruising!

DuesToTheDirt · 30/05/2024 18:29

City/culture/activities for me. And I don't much like going to the same place twice - there are so many new places to experience.

Couldn't stand a beach holiday, though for preference I will pick somewhere warm and dry for a holiday.

I went skiiing a couple of times when younger, and it was fun, but I wouldn't be up for it now.

Camping is OK if warm and dry, which mostly it isn't in this country. And if it is I'm likely to get hay fever.

I'm like you op.

My ideal holiday day is

Wake up and have a buffet breakfast

Sit by pool...read a good book, occasionally dip in pool

Snack at pool bar

Sit by pool some more

Nap in room and get ready for dinner

Dinner

Gentle walk along beach

Drinks and watch some entertainment

Bed

And repeat all week

I'm lucky that we have a few holidays a year. One skiing, one winter sun (canaries and self catering), all inclusive in either turkey or Mexico, then a few city trips.

I adore skiing but I wouldn't forego a beach holiday to do it, if I could only choose one.

Could you not compromise and go somewhere like Barcelona, Malaga, faro, Dubrovnik which had both beach and city?

SabrinaThwaite · 30/05/2024 18:51

Road trip with a bit of everything, but we all love dramatic scenery so mountains, deserts, forests for some gentle hiking, plus history and culture but not too city based.

I've done all the compromising throughout the years, we haven't had one beach holiday together! To be fair, he melts when the temperatures rise about 15C and he doesn't like swimming, so there's nothing for him at an AI sun holiday.

I might have been judgemental about ski holidays. I've never been on one, but I do have reynauds and it seems like it gets worse every year so I can't imagine enjoying a holiday anywhere cold. Also, my life is very full on, as I have a disabled daughter and work full time, so skiing really looks like too much work for a holiday.
