Copenhagen at Christmas time

Just about to book Copenhagen for a short break. Arriving on 20th Dec and returning home 23rd, so 3 nights.

Looking to stay at the Mayfair which is close to the train station and only 700 metres from Tivoli Gardens.

It says there are Christmas markets at both Tivoli and the harbour. The harbour being 2.7km away.

Has anyone done the Christmas markets? Just wondering if anyone has any tips or advice. Either about the area in general, or the Christmas markets specifically.

I like to be as informed as possible as both me and DD are Autistic, so it helps to have details.

We actually stayed in that hotel just after Christmas. Can't comment on the Christmas markets as it was all closed down by then, but we had a great time. Just be prepared for the cold - it was absolutely freezing!

Tivoli will be AMAZING at Christmas, we went for Halloween and the effort they went to for that was something else, but I have read christmas is even better! Enjoy

Thanks for this. Was the hotel OK? The rooms look quite nice, but I see on their website that they also have some new rooms. I'm upgrading to a Deluxe as they have espresso machines in them. (Some reviews complained the standard rooms and even superior ones didn't have any tea and coffee making facilities)

I'm pleased you mentioned the cold. It stupidly hadn't crossed my mind yet, so I think I'll see if I can pick up some thermals online to get ahead of the game.

Ooh. Thanks for this. We almost booked for Halloween as we were going to go for the October half term, then it hit me that we could squeeze in this Christmas time trip. I'm starting to get rather excited now.

Tivoli is beautiful at Christmas but busy!! There are a mix of heritage fun fair rides like the ferris wheel, gardens, market and food stalls. You used to have to buying tokens for the rides on entry (not cheap!), but a fabulous festive sight.

The Harbour market was quieter but obviously not set in Gardens. Would recommend a boat trip around Copenhagen to see the sights and you can hop off at the harbour. Nice way of doing it.

Thanks for this. It's really helpful. It's the fabulous festive sight that we are looking for really as DD isn't one for rides. We will be indulging in the food and drinks stalls though.

Interesting to know that the harbour market is quieter as this could be very useful if DD is overwhelmed and we need somewhere less busy.

Boat trip has been added to our to do list.

We had one of the new rooms, the New Standard. I don't think it had tea & coffee facilities but not a priority for us. Our room was gorgeous actually, styled very well with big picture windows. Yes, thermals / gloves / hat and a very thick coat Smile. There was snow whilst we were there which is pretty unusual apparently due to the geography. If you're looking for restaurant recommendations - Schonnemann was fab, as was Cofoco, and you must go to Hart bakery for the cardamon buns Smile.

We got the copenhagen card which was great and included a trip to tivoli (not rides but we did end up buying ride passes) and all our travel including from the airport. We also went to lots of kittle random attractions we probably wouldn't have bothered with if we had to pay individually.

Food and drink (especially alcohol) was VERY expensive, we ended up getting a lot of picnic lunches from the hundreds of 7-11s around or local supermarkets. The first day a basic buyer and chips with a coke for 4 of us cost £100!
