Flying with a baby

We are due to fly from London to Phuket for a family holiday with our 10 month old baby. I have read the recent news about Singapore airlines and Qatar airlines and quite concerned about the safety of our baby. I have put these questions to Qatar but they have been unable to answer. Keen to understand others views on flying with a baby.

My worries are:
Is a lap seatbelt enough?
Are they safe sleeping in the bassinet?
A baby will need to be comforted standing/ walking at times, is there a safe way this could be done?
A baby will need their nappy changed, is it safe for them to be in the toilet (Singapore incident, most significant injuries were from the toilet), is there a belt on the changing mat?
Should a child wear a 5 point harness?

Would be keen to hear thoughts on this.

Thanks.

It was a freak incident. Clearly you will be walking around with your baby at times, changing him in the loo etc. You can’t not. All you can do is keep seatbelts fastened when seated.

It's all fine. What happened was a freak accident. Obviously, it makes sense to wear the belts when seated but don't overthink

I've flown London to Sydney with my DC at that age. During take off and landing you hold the baby on your lap with an extra lap sash seatbelt around the baby. There is no seatbelt in the bassinet but if there is the slightest hint of turbulence the flight crew will make you take your baby out of the bassinet and hold the baby, and again you can put the special seatbelt on. You will need to take the baby to the toilet to change nappies, but again, you can't do that during turbulence if the seat belt sign is on. Realistically, there will be times when your baby is not strapped in.

Fundamentally, though, as others have said, the Singapore Airlines thing was a freak accident. And a freak accident is more likely to happen in cars, on buses, dogs in parks, etc, than on a long haul flight with a reputable airline.
