Is Simmy worth a visit from Rhodes

We are off to Rhodes; will be based in Lardos; we don’t like overdeveloped or very touristy resorts; prefer a bit more natural, authentic places. Trying to decide whether we go to Symi or not?

TIA

I loved it...but it was 40 years ago!

Absolutely loved Symi but it was a while back! Lots of steps! More coves than beaches and some very cute tavernas. The architecture is beautiful and the locals very friendly. A very relaxed vibe. Remember there were a lot of day visitors but it seemed easy enough to find peace and quiet. Would definitely include if you can.

Thank you. I think will add it to the itinerary since we may not go back to that area

what’s the best way to get there? Ferry from Rhodes? Can you take the car?

Def foot passenger on the ferry. V few cars on the island or in deed roads (just for local businesses around sea front really from what I remember). It's very hilly and lots of steps so more a walking destination. Lovely if tiring walk up the main steps and over the top to the quiet cove on the other side. Sorry - can't remember names! Take lots of water!!

Symi is beautiful. Its an hour from Rhodes Town by boat. Are you going for the day or staying there?

There are a lot of steps above the port which make for a nice wander and beautiful views.

Small water taxis leave Symi port and take you to beautiful beaches that can only be reached by boat. My favourite was St. George's Bay which has a little church and is surrounded by cliffs. You see goats navigating their descent from the top and they are also on the beach.

Yes! A couple of nights on Symi is enough to get the taxi boat around the lovely beaches (take cash, some of the beaches are off grid) and to walk up the many steps to St Michael's monastery. Which funnily enough is on the Saint Michael's ley line connecting many other Michael monuments! It has an interesting history.

The colourful bay as you come into Symi is beautiful. Well worth the hop from Rhodes for a night or two.

We stayed overnight. No car. Lovely little town. Lots of steps and it felt very hot. Not much shade.

Thank you; was thinking of going for the day only; haven’t booked anything there

What’s the website to buy the ferry tickets?

There are lots, I find Greeka easy to use and you can plan hopping trips there as well

I went to Symi for a week for my honeymoon. Its very unspoilt . The main port town is the busiest area but nothing like Santorini or Mykonos. As others have said theres lots of steps and alleyways up to the Chora where most of the islanders live. We stayed in an airbnb in the Chora and walked to the harbour or pedi beach. One day we hired a car and drove over the mountains to panormitis which is the most religious part of the island. And we went to a beach with goats too. There was no paying for sunbeds/fancy cocktails it was very simple and relaxed. I would recommend spending a couple of days there altho I dont think the ferry is everyday. There were also a lot of stray cats and kittens.

Thank you. Will book a day there

We spent 4 nights there and it was great. I’d recommend at least one full day. Take a boat to one of the beaches during the day (thus avoiding any cruise ship crowds in the port town) and then explore the town in the evening - it’s very scenic and you get great views just by walking around the waterfront.
