Solo for a day in NYC

My husband is in the States on business end of June.
I'm flying out to meet him in NYC but will have an evening & morning into mid afternoon to kill on my own.
Evening most likely will just be spent in the hotel room with a bottle of wine.

Any suggestions for things to do/places to go on my own the following morning for a few hours? I like the look of the Broadway museum..something I'd enjoy more than husband so could go there.

Hotel is in Midtown, don't want to stray too far but would quite like to explore a little bit. First time travelling solo, I'm a bit apprehensive but kinda looking forward to having a little bit of me time!

Thanks!

Tenement museum is great.
Or head down to Twin Towers memorial?

somethingisnotquiteright · 23/05/2024 19:39

We'll be going to ground zero together but tenement museum is a good shout!

How about joining an organised walking tour?

I did a great foodie one round little Italy and China town years ago - was with a friend but there were singles on it too

NYC is so easy to get around the world is your oyster! I'd potter round Chelsea market for lunch then have a stroll on the highline up to Hudsons Yard if I had a day to myself there.

Paninaro94 · 23/05/2024 19:42

Just wander around, that will more than take a morning and afternoon.

Tenement museum is good but quite far downtown. If you want to do an organised activity in Midtown then the backstage tour of Radio Ciry Music Hall is the best there is.

I had a day in NYC on my own when visiting for work. I did the Highline walk then went to the 911 museum.

Was also going to recommend the Radio City Music Hall tour, I really enjoyed it

Oh and we also got audience tickets to The View and Kelly Clarkson show, they are free on a website called 1iota, you might be able to get something for your dates. They passed a few hours!

People tend to like the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). It's right in midtown and has a lovely sculpture garden as well.

Another recommendation for the High Line, and a weekday morning is the best time to go so it isn't crammed.

Take a ferry! The ferries are cheap and a great way to feel like you're out and about without having to do much. You can easily plan a round trip (for example I did pier 11 to East 90th, got off and had a little walk round and a cup of tea (lovely area) then got a different ferry back to Pier 11. You could start/finish in midtown. I honestly cannot recommend the ferries enough.

Or go to Central Park for a walk via Levain cookies for a treat on the way and just meander around. There are toilets etc in the park and on a nice day you could easily spend ages there.

In the evening depending on where you're staying you could easily go out for a walk round the shops if you don't want to stay in with a bottle of wine. In midtown you're unlikely to be far away from some and it doesn't have to be a shopping trip as such, more just a mooch round.

See, I do like the idea of wandering around in the evening but I won't get to the hotel until about 7/7:30pm. I was a bit unsure of walking around by myself that late in the day, but presumably there will still be loads of people about?
I've never been before & don't really like going out walking on my own at home after 9pm.

I'm using all these ideas to make a mini itinerary!

A big department store like Bloomingdale's will be open until 8 but the smaller shops close at 6. Madison Avenue, which has the posh shops, is dead in the evenings.

christmaspudding43 · 24/05/2024 14:51

Yes, there will be loads of people about! Roughly whereabouts in midtown will you be staying?

I'm not suggesting you go to Times Square particularly, but chain stores there are open until 11/midnight/1am depending on the store/day of the week. Round Herald Square not quite so late but still maybe 10pm.

The beauty is for something like mooching round chain stores you don't need to decide in advance or plan much, so if you're a bit unsure you can just wait and see how you feel when you get there and it's hardly a bucket list item if you decide against it. Are you planning on eating in the hotel?

I live in New York! 9pm is peak dinner time so anywhere with lots of restaurants will be heaving.

PP suggested the Highline in the day - I recommend starting at Manhattan West, getting breakfast and a coffee at Daily Provisions, then mooching over to Hudson Yards, doing some exploring, then heading down the Highline to The Whitney Museum. Go to the Whitney then have a stroll around the Meatpacking District and the West Village. Lots of nice little cafes and restaurants for you to grab some lunch.
