Hi we are planning on eating out at least twice a day , visiting Auschwitz by train , The salt mine and other attractions. We also need to get from the airport into the city . Many thanks 🙏

Train fare from airport into the City was about £3.50.
Very easy.

Have you prepaid for Salt Mines and Auschwitz?

Eating out is very reasonable - even sitting out in the main square with all the tourists.

Although we didn't need an Zloty. Everywhere takes cards.

InsolentNoise · 22/05/2024 23:57

There is a great shop in the salt mines; I bought an amber necklace there last year and I never take it off.
You can book an Auschwitz trip with a tour guide; the bus will take you right there.

I only take enough foreign dosh to cover tipping or the odd icecream, street food - card all the way

MistyRoseBlue · 23/05/2024 00:48

Thanks but I don't really want to use a card

We went for four days.

We ate out twice a day.
Went to the salt mines and Auschwitz.
Paid for a couple of Ubers
And had one blow out night which involved an expensive meal and lots of alcohol. We spent about £400.

We had no cash at all, but could you not just use a cash machine when you need money?

AppleStrudel23 · 23/05/2024 06:38

I don't know how much you need but I did those trips for my honeymoon! (Minus the concentration camp because the tickets were sold out). That was honestly the best holiday I've been on, the Polish are so lovely and the food is amazing! The salt mine was insane.

Maybe you've already been and I'm preaching to the choir 😅. Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful time!

Also, if you can, get to a shooting range. I don't know if they have one in Krakow but we went to one in Warsaw and it was so much fun

AppleStrudel23 · 23/05/2024 06:42

Sorry final post to talk about money, we basically paid everything on card and everything is about half the price of UK at the moment in terms of food in tourist areas. I would allow for £500 worth in an absolute emergency

AnnieSF · 23/05/2024 20:33

Spent a week there last year. It was fabulous.

Why are you wanting to take a train to Auchswitz? The bus tours are so reasonable and you skip the lines etc.

I recommend Get your guide for this and also https://freewalkingtour.com/krakow/?gadsource=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0ruyBhDuARIsANSZ3wotyGwOI9mRKD2oQzx7fEsLk-xnHNTdKC3QPCPA5uYOXEpH1xvECqMaAsa7EALww_wcB

We did the free Jewish walking tour and you pay what you feel it is worth.
Also this covers all the museums etc. great value!

We didn't use any zloty.

EllaPaella · 23/05/2024 21:11

I spent 4 days there last November. It wasn't as cheap as everyone had led me to believe but is certainly cheaper to eat out than the UK if you avoid the main square. Beer was cheap - wine wasn't.
We did Auschwitz but pre-booked with Viator who provide a small car to and from. Wasn't cheap but was very convenient as they picked us up from the hotel and dropped us off there afterwards- that was about £80 all in.
I spent £350 not including the tour price. That was eating out lunch and dinner every day.

Why not? It's so easy and you don't risk losing cash. Plus many places don't take cash these days.

We now only carry a very small amount of cash - £20 sort of level, which you can just get out of a cash machine or ask your friends/family if anyone has a few Zloty lying around that you can buy off them. This is used for small purchases eg bus fares where sometimes they don't take cards on the bus and you don't want to faff around downloading an app and work out how to use it.

Everything else is paid for by debit card that gives the official exchange rate and doesn't have any fees. There are loads of these now - Kroo, Starling, Monzo, Chase etc. Plus some bank accounts like Santander are also no fee/exchange rate loading. Moneysaving Expert has good article on these.
