Mosquito repellent top tips?

I'm one of the unlucky ones who gets bitten to shreds by mosquitos on every holiday so I am looking for your best tips. Last summer I went to Italy and got bitten so badly and hugely allergic that I ended up on antibiotics for over a week after so I need to do something!

I only have hand luggage so can't take much in the form of liquids (although have never found repellent with deet etc to be very helpful for me anyway) so looking for other suggestions. I seen that taking vitamin B12 can help? Obviously there are mosquito bands etc but I haven't found any of these to work so just looking for other options? Thanks!

Incognito products are excellent.

You need to atrack it from different angles. Use jungle formula, and wipes from b and m before you go out Also have a zapper with you at all times you can get them on amazon. Take a daily antihistamine. And finally spray your room with mosquito killer before you go out. I also have small spray bottles that i fill with Turkish cologne, it smells of lemons, is very cooling and I spray it liberally whenever I sit down or get a chance.

Also to say that the wipes are good because you can cover most of your skin, if you miss a bit with spray mosquitos will find it.

My wife in recent years has always been absolutely eaten alive on holidays.
I heard about a product called Mosquito Milk (bought from chemist direct online) and got some.
She got no bites on our last two holidays by using this.
So would highly recommend.
I used it as well but am not as prone to being bitten anyway as her.

This. I’m also sadly a mosquito attractant. You get deet fabric spray from Amazon. I do my clothes before I go. Smidge everywhere, citronella bands I wear one on my hair and on wrist. Take b12 a week before you go and garlic capsules.

I’ve found a full bells and whistles approach a game changer tbh.

After-Bite in case any of the blighters get through your defences.

Started using Vicks Vaporub when I started an allotment, before I used it I was eaten alive by horseflies.

Vicks on the ankles, back of the knees, wrists, inside of the elbows, armpits and below the ears. Haven't seen one since I started doing it and always carry a little tub when I go on holidays as it seems to keep the mozzies away as well.

I am going to try this, thanks.

Superdrug own brand equivalent of Jungle Formula is excellent. Black and orange can. I live in the south of Italy and it's hot and humid. One squirt of this and they flee. I just put a bit on one arm usually.
And a Night and Day plug in.

smoking helps preferably cigars..

Personally I've found it better to buy it locally to where you're going.

endofthelinefinally · 04/06/2024 15:11

Buy locally if you can. They know the best stuff for their own mosquitos.
Apply the lotion during the day and top up with spray in the evening.
Wear long sleeves and back packer type trousers.
Take vitamin B supplements - mosquitos don't like the smell in your blood.
Avoid eating too much sugar.
If you get bitten take an oral antihistamine and apply tiger balm (if you are going to be in Asia or S E Asia). It is better than antihistamine cream.
You can buy stick on patches for your clothes.
All above from years of personal experience.
DH just stands next to me. They don't bite him.

endofthelinefinally · 04/06/2024 15:13

Oh, and those little yellow clicky electric shock gadgets are great too for the itching.

KarateSchnitzel · 04/06/2024 15:54

Buying locally isn't always the best advice. Due to toxicity, DEET is restricted in some countries as we found out in ibiza last year when I got eaten alive. Jungle formula is, as I am aware, by far the strongest DEET protection available. Pharmacies in Ibiza were only selling citronella with 20% DEET which was not effective at all.

Incognito is the only thing works for me. (Or Phazer by Leovet which is a horse spray not sure approved for humans but when I've forgotten it's handy as there's usually some in the car. Tend to just do my hair and clothes with that.)
