Vaccines for travel to Thailand?

Finding conflicting info online. General consensus seems to be Hep A and Tetanus - is this what most people do?

Other sources said its fine as long as up-to-date with vaccines for life in the UK.

I have had 5 doses of Tetanus and 1 of Hep A, all over 10 years ago. Is it worth getting a booster of both? Would have to pay privately as last min. Do they work straight away? Thanks

Hep A, tetanus and some people opt for typhoid as well (it's free on NHS so might as well).
How last minute have you left it? They work best after 2 weeks but you will have some protection however late you leave it, so better than none.
First Hep A lasts 12 months, the second will last 25 years. Tetanus needs to be within 10 years, though if you've had your 5 in a lifetime you're considered covered for UK.

If it’s only one dose of Hep A vaccine you had, I’d get some advice about whether to get another. I had two, one about 6 months after the first, and I know that gives 25 years protection.

NHS only give combined diphtheria, tetanus polio I think now - I got one recently as it was over 10 years since my last and I was going somewhere where medical facilities were limited. I was advised I should have another, as was a colleague who had already had 5.

Not a medic, just a frequent traveller so this isn’t medical advice - but me personally I wouldn’t bother with the others unless I met one of the specific risk factors - or if I was going to be travelling particularly rurally / off the beaten track.

Thanks both, managed to get both in time.

We've only gone for Tetanus which we had today. We did have Hep A in 2004 but not sure that we finished the course but it wasn't clear that we actually needed it.

Glad you got sorted @ncob

I know this is an old thread but like the OP am finding conflicting advice online.

we go to Thailand for 3 weeks; koh Samui Bangkok and Chang mai (with a few excursions into the hills near Chang mai)- what vaccinations do we need?

SeaDippingandLattes · 01/06/2025 08:04

@zippyswife oh we are looking at doing exactly that trip next year for my 40th (with the kids). Did you book with a travel agent or did you book flights and hotels yourself? Just looking at both options now x

zippyswife · 08/06/2025 08:40

@SeaDippingandLattes we did it all ourselves- think we got it for a better deal than an agent. £1300 pp for the 2 weeks. And as regards to the vaccines- I contacted my GP they’ve booked us all appointments with the nurse who will check what we need and administer 👍🏻
