Would you ever put a trip on a credit card?

Situation:
You have 4 weeks off work and unlikely to be able to take more than 2 weeks for years.
You are about to get a huge pay increase, from £3k a month to £8k a month after tax.

Would you, shove a £6k trip on a credit card and pay it off after you go back to work?

Yes! Mainly for the security of paying with a credit card.

TookTheBook · 21/05/2024 19:49

Depends really - is the credit card 0% APR? I wouldn't unless it was zero.

CitrineRaindropPhoenix · 21/05/2024 19:50

Yes. I'd pay for a trip on credit card anyway to get the charge back security but if I knew I could pay it off, I'd put the trip on the card.

Singleandproud · 21/05/2024 19:50

Yes if I was confident I'd be able to pay it back, I'd make sure the Apr was low and would rather an unsecured loan than CC as its more tempting to spend on it again.

BendingSpoons · 21/05/2024 19:52

In those circumstances yes. Presumably other than the trip you could continue to live within your £3k a month budget for another 2 months and you would have paid it off easily.

mumof1or2 · 21/05/2024 19:56

Hell yes! And enjoy the trip

Ponderingwindow · 21/05/2024 19:58

I always pay on a credit card, but only with money I also have sitting in the bank.
so unless I could be certain I could pay the whole thing off when the bill came, no, I would not pay for a holiday with a credit card in the sense of actually using it as a loan.

decionsdecisions62 · 21/05/2024 19:58

I make sure I pay for trips on credit cards due to the insurance of getting money back if something goes wrong. However I have a plan for getting it paid off.

BeeCucumber · 21/05/2024 20:03

Yes - always use credit cards for everything - including holidays. Never use your debit card. Pay them off in full each month if they are interest bearing . Make sure you get a new one with two years interest free and move the balance to another one and keep doing that until it’s paid off.

Have fun!

HoHoHoliday · 21/05/2024 20:03

Yes I would.
You should pay for trips by credit card anyway for protection.
It sounds like a dream trip that won't be possible for a while afterwards.
You know you can pay it off easily after pay rise.
Life is short and should be enjoyed - this is within your means.
I love your username!

Whataretalkingabout · 21/05/2024 20:08

Yes for the fantastic free travel insurance.

GoingOnHol · 21/05/2024 20:10

Yes if it was interest free if I was paying it off at a later date

we book on credit card even if we pay it off straightaway for the protection plus we have a cash back credit card

LindorDoubleChoc · 21/05/2024 20:13

Yes, I put any purchase that I want some sort of guarantee on on a credit card.

Congratulations on your massive pay rise, I can't understand why you are even asking?

ShesRunningOutTheDoor · 21/05/2024 20:21

Yes. I have put loads of holidays on credit. 0% only. With strict payment plan. have never regretted it

toomanytonotice · 21/05/2024 20:24

Why wouldn’t you?

i wouldn’t pay for it any other way. Protection, as pp said, cash back, and I usually shove it on a 0% card and pay it back gradually. Gives me more flexibility and doesn’t tie up my cash flow.

mondaytosunday · 21/05/2024 20:30

Sure. I put holidays on credit card all the time. You just have to have a plan to pay it off before the interest gets ridiculous, and you seem to have one.

DiscoBeat · 21/05/2024 20:31

We always pay for holidays on credit card, then pay it back as soon as we've completed the booking online, so literally 5 minutes later. I don't like using credit cards but this is the only reason we have them, for extra cover.

Sunnyandsilly · 21/05/2024 20:32

No, I wouldn’t get into credit card debt in case something went wrong.

Tel12 · 21/05/2024 20:33

No.

SagittariusDwarf · 21/05/2024 20:34

Yes, but I always pay for holidays on a credit card anyway, and pay the balance off in full each month.

TemuSpecialBuy · 21/05/2024 20:34

Yes...
if you currently live on a 3k budget and have no other unsecured debt...
100% bang in on the credit card.

As you'll essentially have 5k fun money each month anyway so can repay within 5 weeks/ 2 months of promotion kicking in.

Congrats btw
.

lastdayatschool · 21/05/2024 20:40

More importantly though, what profession gives a monthly pay rise from £3k to £8k net ?

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 21/05/2024 20:43

Why wouldn't you? Credit cards aren't the devil

ThereAreNoSloesOnThere · 21/05/2024 20:46

Yes.

I use a cc for payments because of the protection.

I usually have a savings account that is a designated holiday account - I out away a set amount monthly. Most of the time I have enough- or almost enough - to transfer straight over to pay off the CC. Sometimes I buy a holiday that I can pay in monthly installments (my favourite kind!) and that covers it.

But in a situation where I know I would have money coming in and can pay it i would use a cc. 100% if the alternative was no holiday!
