Need to cancel

We booked a holiday in April, online through the Tui website. I changed the flights they offered to more appropriate times. An extra charge was added to the holiday to do this.

I stupidly didn’t check when the email came through. We paid a deposit of £360.

We booked it under the recommendation of my DD (36) who was reading reviews.
I have done a deep dive to get more reviews, it looks like this isn’t an appropriate hotel to take my grand daughters to.

Using trip adviser,I found the top 5 hotels in Lanzarote and I booked the top one, with a different tour operator who could offer the better flight times for myself, a disabled adult and the little ones in our party thinking I would only be losing £360. Tui did not offer this hotel or the flight times I believed I had paid for on our booking with them.

I called Tui to cancel and they are asking for £3623.74, which will be paid to EasyJet as the flights are non refundable. So I asked if I am paying for those seats on that flight, will they remain empty? The Tui rep said she didn’t know. I asked if easyJet then resell those seats would I get a refund? The answer was no.

Is there any way I can reduce the amount we will lose? Or do I put it down to an expensive lesson?

This is the first holiday abroad I have ever booked. We haven’t been away for 10 years, hence my mistake

When are you travelling / were due to be travelling with Tui?

Moier · 21/05/2024 15:22

You have or want to cancel the whole holiday?. You don't want to go at all?
Which hotel is it?
I go to Lanzarote a few times a year.. Grandkids go top and they love it

MalibuBarbieDreamHouse · 21/05/2024 15:24

What is so wrong with the hotel that you don’t think it will be suitable for your grandkids? All kids really care about on holiday is a pool!

nunsflipflop · 21/05/2024 15:24

We were travelling to Lanzarote and we still are with a different travel agent. I honestly thought we would only lose the £360

The reviews state that there are loose tiles all around the pool and children’s play area. The staff are particularly unhelpful and I then discovered that it’s in the middle of nowhere

Have you got the booking conditions you agreed to when you made the initial booking with Tui?

Is it a package, maybe the best bet, for a admin fee, might be to try and move the whole holiday to another date, as you will probably still have to pay it all

We already booked elsewhere. Better hotel, better flights and it was a lot cheaper than Tui. I did it in ignorance because Tui booking conditions said we would only lose our deposit which was £360. They are now saying the flights are non refundable so we have to pay for those

If your flights aren’t with Rui airlines then you have to pay for them in full if you cancel. It does they this in the small print, but no one reads that.

f I were you I’d cancel the jet 2 one, which should be cheaper to cancel and either try and move the tui hotel one, or just make do. Which hotel is it, I get it’s nowhere near as bad as the reviews make out.

nunsflipflop · 21/05/2024 15:37

Jet2 will want flight payment too I assume?

LIZS · 21/05/2024 15:37

Normally the full balance is due 10 or 12 weeks ahead of departure and there will be a sliding scale of charges up to 100%, although doubtful this far ahead. What are the t and c's? Are the flights the amount being charged?

Sunnyandsilly · 21/05/2024 15:38

Have you already done the same with rhe second agent, booked new flights `?

Did you not read any of the terms you agreed to? You do really need to. Just ask jet 2 or read them,

LIZS · 21/05/2024 15:39

How old are the reviews? You could ask tui if the complaints have been addressed or to move you to another hotel.

nunsflipflop · 21/05/2024 15:37

no, jet 2 almost certainly will be loss deposit only as I believe all thier holidays are on their own airline.

Adipocere · 21/05/2024 15:39

if you are going to have to pay for 2 holidays, at least if you can change the date to next year, you will get to go on 2 holidays, even though its not where you want to go, otherwise you are going to have to pay for 2 holidays but only go on one of them

The reviews are from holiday makers returning now, so very recent

If it's a Jet2 package holiday I believe they charge cancellations on a sliding scale, so definitely worth seeing if you can cancel that one.

Top tip for checking reviews: give far more weight to the number of reviews and the average rating than any individual review.

A hotel with thousands of reviews where the majority are good or above is likely to be fine. A hotel with only a handful of reviews (good or bad) I'd be suspicious of.

JennyfromtheBlok · 21/05/2024 15:41

which Hotel and resort in Lanzarote is it?

EdgarsTale · 21/05/2024 15:44

A lot of people make this mistake with Tui, thinking they only lose the deposit if they cancel, but you’re obliged to pay the full amount. Check the T&C you agreed to.

Sunnyandsilly · 21/05/2024 15:46

Op, get in to jet 2 immediately and see if you can cancel do it now, but only if it’s just deposit and not flights.

Unless,,,have you already cancelled the Tui ones?

cherryassam · 21/05/2024 15:46

Okay so yes with Tui if the flights are with another airline, I believe you have to pay these in full regardless of when you cancel.

Is there any hotel you would be happy to switch to on your Tui booking?

If the second booking is with Jet2 for similar dates, you should be able to cancel the second booking and just lose the deposits. This might work out cheaper than losing the money on the airfares with Tui.

TakeOnFlea · 21/05/2024 15:49

Do not cancel the tui one and ring jet2 and explain.

Which hotel is it?
