Hi folks

I'm looking for some top tips/advice on traveling to a hot climate with my 6 month old son.

We're off to Egypt soon and am concerned i will forget something crucial for him, or completely over pack and end up forking out a fortune for being over my baggage allowance!
I only have 20kg between us.
Also can;t believe how expense baby stuff is for swimming, holiday, travel etc!
Found a swim suit for him to 'avoid wee wee spills into the pool' that was £24 !! Thats more than MY swimsuit!

help me.

WE took DS to crete last year (3mo), not as hot as Egypt, but he got around in his vests during the day, clothes just for night when it was a bit cooler. Didn't wear a lot of the many clothes we took for him. Got a shadeababe thingy to put on his pushchair so he could sleep in that. And gave him plenty of water between milk feeds. That's about it really.

light coloured cotton clothes, sun hat, LOTS of sunblock, always have plenty of drinks for him. Keep out of the middday sun if you can.

his clothes won't take much space- you can always handwash bits while you're there and thus take less.

Sunblock and water you can buy there, so don't need to pack a ton.

Keep him covered in light cotton clothes as much as possible. Long loose sleeves are better than short

Keep him completely covered in the pool too, as the water reflects the sun

Avoid going out in hottest part of day

Lots of water/fluid/rest

Find an UV shade for his buggy [you can get ones that fit all the way over the buggy]

Highest factor sunscreen available

Get his one of those hats that has the neck shade at the back

Shade at all times where possible, just because they don't get the sun, don't forget about sunstroke.

  • Stay indoors 11 am to 3 pm and baby in the shade / or fully covered all other times including in the pool.
  • Pack milton sterilising tablets and tuperware to sterilise stuff
  • Give frequent sips of water between feeds even if you BF as your body and milk production is not used to the climate but do let him BF often anyway. GIVE MINERAL WATER FROM A BOTTLE YOU OPEN AND STORE YOURSELF.
  • Don't pack so many clothes for baby. Take a bit washing up powder and wash vests in the evening as will be very sweaty.

I took my DS to South Africa at 9 months and the most useful things were one of those pop up tents that are UV protective, you can get them from ELC for about £20, and a Factor 60 full body swimsuit. Other than that he was in just nappies most of the time. We went in January so no summer clothes in the shop, but I bought some bundles of shorts and t-shirts from Ebay very cheaply.
