Holiday abroad this year

Morning 👋

We are fortunate to be going away for the week to Majorca this Summer. We’ve not been abroad for years so very excited. We have a 7 year old and a 1 year old and I’ve made a list of things we need to buy to take (a lot really for my 1 year old) and the list is huge. Has anyone got any tips on how to keep the cost of holiday shopping down? Is there anything which may not be necessary to take? Many thanks in advance 😄

What’s on your list?
I always took enough nappies for a few days and then bought them out there. Who wants to take up half their suitcase with 2 weeks worth of nappies - they’re not exactly hard to find. Look for Eroski supermarkets, usually fairly large and they’ll have them. Also pharmacies but they tend to be more expensive. Dodots are the brand I always used in Majorca, I used pampers in UK and they’re very similar.

Thank you. Are the nappies more expensive abroad or the same price? We are needing to keep costs down as much as possible.

I think really it’s a lot of baby gadget type things which people use on holiday, just really wondering what the essentials are without spending loads x

Seriously, what ‘gadgets’?
The only gadgets I’d take are a thermometer (already got, don’t need to buy and doesn’t take up any space)
Baby monitor - you can use a phone instead, so not an essential
When they were less than one, I’d take Milton’s tablets and sterilising unit, but that wasn’t expensive and fairly small. Mine didn’t have formula much after they turned 12mo.

I took my kids today Spain when babies. I took a small supply of nappies as I knew I could buy those out there. I brought a booster seat that attached to any chair, a lightweight foldable buggy. A few small toys. That's it!

I took my baby on holiday and just brought her normal pushchair, didn't buy anything special for the trip except sun creams and a UV suit

BurbageBrook · 20/05/2024 13:32

Oh and swim nappies, other than that it's just usual UK summer stuff.

TakeOnFlea · 20/05/2024 14:02

Baby gadgets? You can probably do without all of them to be honest!

Poppy20871 · 20/05/2024 14:52

Thank you everyone. Like I say I haven’t been abroad in a long time or with small children, thank you for your help. Did anyone take an umbrella for the pram or any shade type thing?

We didn't take an umbrella but we have a pram with a hood that shades the baby's face and then we put suncream on her anyway. I do think a shade is a good idea though.

For the baby - big sit in blow up ring and a massive hat and bob them for hours in the pool. Sun tent for the beach.

Otherwise you will be hiding from the sun lots.

Hoeboe · 20/05/2024 19:31

If you're in a hotel you might not need to take many towels as you can often hire them for free (or hire for cheap).

Buy sunlotion in the UK as usually cheaper.

Take calpol/paracetamol - just easier having your own than having to find a pharmacy that is open especially with siesta hours.

If you're in a hotel, especially a biggish one with tour reps, they'll probably have a 'swop box' where people leave things behind and you can use them (such as parasols/inflatables for the pool). Even if one isn't advertised ask the reps if anyone has left anything (I always manage to get a parasol to use at the beach!)

BurbageBrook · 20/05/2024 21:32

Ooh and recommend giving Calpol just as your gate is called so that it kicks in for takeoff in case of ear pain. Just a precaution.

LimoncelloSpritz · 20/05/2024 21:49

We took umbrella buggy with parasol. Calpol. Stacking cups as these can be used in the Bath/on the beach etc. Microwave steriliser bags or Milton and a Tupperware container depending on whether we had a microwave or not, swim nappies. They have babies abroad and you can get most things from supermarket.

Thank you everyone really helpful 😄. That’s great knowing to check about a swap box x
