We've had a dreadful year with bereavement and have the may half term booked off. We would like to go anywhere in Europe or UK which meets the following wish list-

Nice accommodation ( I don't really want caravan or camping) i like Hoseasons lodges in the Uk and Landal so something similar
Ideally a separate bedroom for ds who is 11
Somewhere he will be able to meet other kids to play with but we are not fans of big hotels with kids clubs and structured activities ( although ds would be!)
Somewhere we can relax and give ds a bit of freedom/ independence but where we can do nice things together as a family too

I like menorca and Greece and have always wanted to go to lake garda but other than that we are not really well travelled.

UK is fine too but I'm worried about the weather !

DS wish list is somewhere to play football and a nearby water park or theme park as a bonus!

Padova Premium Camping Resort in Croatia

How warm do you want it to be?

There are several Eurocamps on Lake Garda but it won’t be hot hot in May

Other Eurocamp locations in Italy might work and might be warmer - there are some on Sardinia for example

Eurocamp also has sites in Croatia - Zaton Holiday Resort comes to mind

Other sites in Croatia that might fit the bill:

Krk Premium Camping Resort, Krk
Jesevac Premium Resort, Krk
Camping Cikat, Lošinj
Arena Kazulan, Istria

Its worth checking for any of them how much of the park and facilities is open in May as some don’t have their high season starting until later in June

Would an apartment complex with a pool / some facilities fit the bill?

There's nothing about a hotel that has structure and kids clubs that means that you can't go elsewhere for some of the time, either with your DS, or without if he's signed up for a day's activities. It's going to be by the far the best way for him to meet others of his age group, compared to if you go somewhere smaller and take pot luck.

A separate bedroom will likely be pricey — it might nearly double the cost of the accommodation part of the trip, because it's an entire room that the hotel can't sell to someone else on a double occupancy basis. But if you look on Booking.com and play with 1- and 2-bedroom options for the hotels you like the look of, some type of family room with partitions or a separate sleeping area might pop up.

Do you mean May this year?

What is your budget?

We stayed here before in one of the mobile homes (though we were not via Eurocamp) and has a giant pool with waterslide, and football on site with places to eat. Very close to the coast.

Thanks everyone

Yes an apartment complex with shared pool/ facilities would be perfect. Yes this may.. next week! So options will be limited I know

I agree re cost of extra room so would consider hotel room but really don't like the idea of a massive complex-- ideally want some luxury so dh and I have a holiday without masses of people and blaring music around the pool which is my ( probably biased) view of some of the big complexes with kids clubs.. I'm happy to try it for ds sake if necessary but would like to explore other options first

Where are you able to fly from and what is your budget? I’ll see what I can find

hghh · 16/05/2024 18:53

Ideally London gatwick.. or can Eurostar or get ferry if we go to France

Also happy with Isle of Wight or anywhere in UK

Don't really have a budget but not mega bucks!

We stayed at Château Le Foret Eurocamp in the Vendée region of France. There are no tents, they're all lodges. It's a lovely small site , quite french, with a kids pool and a adult pool. Also Table tennis, bike hire, and a lovely courtyard to go to at night. Very french. It was the only holiday where we've made friends with another family on holiday. Something about being one of the few English there probably. Would recommend Puy de Fou for a day trip, it is breathtaking!

Go to lake Garda if you've always wanted to. 11 is the perfect age! Many of the campsites have lodge accommodation and if you choose Lazise, Peschiera, Cisano or Bardolino you're close to the theme parks for DS.

It will be lovely weather!

There’s some great looking Eurocamps in France - if you’re happy driving then that gives loads more options.

This one looks good with the indoor pools for example, and if you’d be happy getting the ferry to St Malo or Caen, not too far driving the other end.

But have a look at Eurocamp and see if any take your fancy!

If you’re not too bothered about warm weather you could look at Duinrell in the Netherlands or Billund in Denmark.

Portugal, lots of different types of resorts to try and only 2.5 hour flight. If you want huge beaches east is great or the west for rocky backdrops to stunning coves. Not too expensive but not a cheap as Spain. Just back, the weather was glorious and didn't see one mossie which was a huge plus to enjoying evenings outside.
